Petition Started to Get Property Tax Rebate Back

2008_11_fourhund.jpgAfter Mayor Bloomberg announced that the popular $400 property rebate to homeowners would end given the city's economic problems, City Councilman Domenic Recchia started an online petition that urges Mayor Bloomberg to reinstate the rebate. Recchia said, "Every penny counts for New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet. Countless constituents have told me they rely on the rebate check for a variety of activities, from holiday shopping to home heating costs." You can sign the petition here--there are 761 signatures so far. And Councilman Vincent Ignizio and others are investigating whether a lawsuit can be filed to make sure the rebates continue.

I don't get it. We want things to improve, but we're unwilling to give anything up? Tricky.

But sure. Make him trim the cash from waste-of-money activities such as bridge renamings.

I own a house in Brooklyn and I think a rebate would be a terrible idea. The money has to come from somewhere, doesn't it? We want programs, but we're unwilling to pay. Recipe for disaster. Bush was a schmuck* for sending out stimulus money. Obama should make everyone return it.

* Bush is a schmuck for a host of reasons. I merely state one of them.

The rebate was only something temporary that seemed permanent because the city could afford to keep giving out a nice reward for property owners during the boom times between 2004 and 2007. But now I think rescinding the rebate is a good idea in order to help get the coffers back in shape after taking such a hit. New Yorkers shouldn't feel such a sense of entitlement to "free" money.

Screw that. If you're going to be giving money back, why are renters subsidizing homeowners?

renters aren't subsidizing anyone. The higher the property tax the higher the floor for your rent and the higher the guideline board raises those as well.

It's robbing Peter to pay Paul...

Why the rebate in the first place? Just lower the damn tax already!

Please, Recchia the pig who was the cheerleader of overturning the will of the people to extend his job and has the most pork should drop dead. He should give us at least half of the taxpayer's money (pork/slush funds) and drop dead. fat bastard

Don't bother, King Bloomberg will get his way.
