This is Houndstooth Pub, a big new bar and restaurant at West 37th Street that's located in 6,800 square feet of space formerly occupied by a Chock full o' Nuts coffee shop. It's run by the guys behind popular after-work bar Stitch, and, for what it's worth, a couple of blokes from Snow Patrol have sunk some money into it. The bi-level space has three bars; one on the ground floor and two downstairs.
Depending on how things go, this could be a good refuge to remember when you've got time to kill in the Garment District. Or if you're catching AC/DC at the Garden next week, you might want to pre-game with Houndstooth's MSG Berry: "Wild Strawberry Infused Liqueur and Champagne Garnished with Drunk Wild Strawberries." We're told the fare will be local, organic, British-style gastropub, and general manager Nicholas Cohen assures us the kitchen "should be open next week pending the idiots at the NYC Dept Buildings getting off their asses!!!"

That's it, provoke the already touchy Department of Buildings. This should end well.
Stitch is terrible.
I miss Chock Full o' Nuts.
I miss Chock full of Nuts too. Remember the grumpy old lady waitresses with white caps with hairnets? The snaky counters? It was all counters. The funny food they had, like a cream cheese sandwich on raisin bread. And then they introduced a burger (in 1977) that I swear was the most delicious, juiciest burger in the world with lettuce and tomoato and sauce dripping down your hands. Mmmmm! I used to go to the one on Union Square, 14th Street. Cheap! We need that now, more than this stupid hipster bar!
Ugh. I went there the other night to wait for my husband to bring the car around (we were at the Zipper Factory down the block). It was okay, but full of stockbrokers and the staff was not particularly friendly.
I would suggest killing time at the Distinguished Wakamba (unless you're low on cash), the Zipper (they have a bar), or the Holland (on Ninth near 39th).
Was that the Chock Full o Nuts that was featured prominently in "Escape from New York" ??
