Bloomberg Announces Big Budget Cuts for NYC

2008_11_blobudg.jpgIn announcing an update to the city's $59 billion budget today, Mayor Bloomberg detailed a wide range of painful budget cuts. With a "cumulative $4 billion budget gap for FY 2009 and FY 2010," the cuts include "$1.5 billion in savings achieved through spending reductions and other measures, rescinding the 7 percent property tax reduction immediately, and not issuing the $400 property tax rebate." After voting yesterday, Bloomberg told reporters that the cuts were needed to plug an anticipated $4 billion budget shortfall, saying, "We don't know just how deep this recession is going to go or for how long."

Bloomberg has asked all city agencies find a way to cut spending by 2.5 percent this fiscal year, which ends next June, and cut another 5 percent the following year. He will reduce the city workforce by more than 3,000 employees by laying off 600 workers and dropping the rest through attrition. About 475 of those jobs are at the Department of Education, but officials tell the Times the cuts "would not affect classrooms." And over 50 positions will be eliminated from the Mayor's office.

Two hundred staffers will be cut from the New York City Housing Authority, and 600 workers eliminated from parks, street cleaning and children’s services. The plan will also shorten the time firefighter trainees spend at the academy and cut back on nighttime operations at several firehouses. According to the Times, David I. Weprin, chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee, vowed to closely examine the administration’s numbers and to hold rigorous hearings: "There’s no question we’re going to have a terrible time next year, but the actual revenue numbers are not there yet to justify tax increases being essential."

that's 3000 votes (plus their friends and family) against him.

that Bloompig better keep his paws off our two new stadiums. our sports teams need hundreds of millions in tax rebates and give-aways in order to field a winning team. i hope he has the vision to see that moving stadiums across the street will generate lots of new tax revenue. i wish The Donald would buy a sports team so we can give another billionaire a stadium.

How about deleting that over $425,000,000 garbage garage in West Soho and spend that on schools, not free indoor parking for sanitation workers?

This is going to be funny real soon. Especially when Bloomberg's term limit bill will be overturned by the state legislature and Bloomberg is already proposing very unpopular cuts. He is going to look like such an idiot! NYers are going to want to run him out of town! Forget about any referendum. With the losses the Republicans have taken in Albany, he has very little support. The state Dems are looking to pounce. You need to remember the state reps are true politicians and not the nitwits in the City Council.

Another example of the genius stewardship we absolutely have to have for 4 more years. Way to kick off your campaign, Mike.

Let's start with the ridiculous tax breaks for businesses that use the extra loot for bonuses. Make the tax breaks targeted towards hiring employees - no hires, no breaks.

Mike Bloomberg is an asshole.

Bloomberg can really save the city money if the eliminate the useless corrupted city council. 51 overpaid part time jobs eliminated.

"Two hundred staffers will be cut from the New York City Housing Authority"

How about eliminating the NYCHA altogether? If 400,000 people need my taxes to live in the city, maybe they should move somewhere more affordable, or, like, get a job.

He better get the whole city smoking cigarettes as quickly as possible.

But the cuts will surely affect the classrooms. Conditions are so poor already. All the cuts should come from 65 Court.
