11:57 p.m.: The "next First Family of the United States" is introduced and Barack, Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama walk onstage to the cheering crowd. President-elect Barack Obama seems tired and moved--it's been an emotional few days for him. But he gives a rousing speech outlining his plans and rallying the country:
If there is anyone out there who doubts that America is a place where anything is possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.Obama does acknowledge there are many challenges for the country and said that everyone will need to work hard.Young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled, Americans have sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of red states and blue states. We have been and always will be the United States of America.
It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.
ANd after his speech, Vice-President-elect Joe Biden appears to greet the crowd, and both Obama's and Biden's families join them. Text of Obama's speech can be found at Politico.
11:29 p.m.: MSNBC is showing the scene outside the White House, where there is a huge crowd cheering (for Obama's victory, we imagine). President Bush called Obama, "Mr. President-elect, congratulations. What an awesome night for you, your family, and your supporters. Laura and I called to congratulate you and your good bride. I promise to make this a smooth transition. You are about to go on one of the great journeys of your life. Congratulations and go enjoy yourself." Bush also reportedly invited Obama to the White House.
11:18 p.m.: McCain is addressing his supporters, who boo when he says he called Obama to congratulate him (McCain tells them to stop with a stern, "Please"). McCain's eyes seem glassy as he speaks to Obama's ability to inspire many people. He notes that this is a historic moment for African-Americans and that Obama's election, "Let there be no reason now for Americans to fail to cherish their citizenship in this, the greatest nation on Earth. I pledge to him to do all in my power to help him lead us." He asks his supporters to join him in supporting Obama. "We fought as hard as we could, the failure is mine--not yours" --eliciting boos and no's from the crowd--"I'm so deeply grateful to you."
11:00 p.m.NBC and CNN call the election for Barack Obama. We can hear cheering outside!
NBC: Obama 284 | McCain 146 They count California, Washington and Oregon for Obama and Idaho and Nebraska for McCain. 11:16 p.m. -- Florida and Colorado are called for Obama as well... Obama 333 | McCain 146
CNN: Obama 297 | McCain 139 CNN calls Virginia for Obama.
Fox News: Obama 297 ] McCain 145 Brit Hume is now saying a Fox News colleague says she went to college with Obama and said Barry is "great guy." Hume still says Obama might be "dangerous" and/or "radical."
NBC News reports that McCain called Obama to concede.

Missouri: McCain leads by just under 23,000. Arizona: McCain leads by a little over 380,000. Montana: Obama leads by 1,524. NBC political director Chuck Todd believes Florida is Obama's, based on circumstantial evidence.
http://gothamist.com/2008/01/03/obama_wins_iowa.php
South Dakota is called for McCain Obama 207 | McCain 137
10:11 p.m. Mississippi is called for McCain. NBC: Obama 207 | McCain 135 However, CNN ticker "TWO SENIOR MCCAIN AIDES SEE 'NO PATH TO VICTORY' GIVEN RESULTS SO FAR."
And Christopher Shays, Congressman from Connecticut since 1987, was defeated by Jim Himes, a former Goldman Sachs VP-turned-non-profit housing developer. Shays was the last standing Republican in New England. A moderate Republican with more progressive social views, Shays conceded and referred to the overall desire for change as why he lost.
10:00 p.m.: NBC News projects Utah for McCain, Iowa for Obama. Nevada is too early to call and Montana is too close to call. Obama 207 | McCain 129
And Comedy Central is now airing its live Indecision 2008 special with Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
9:55 p.m.: NBC News projects Texas for McCain. Obama 200 | McCain 124
9:38 p.m.: Now NBC News calls New Mexico for Obama, who now has 200 (projected) electoral votes. West Virginia is called for McCain. Obama 200 | McCain 90
9:26 p.m.: NBC News projects Ohio--and its 20 electoral votes-- for Obama. Louisiana is called for McCain.
Here's Governor David Paterson on NBC--he says, "'It's a great moment for America."
9:00 p.m.: With some 9 p.m. poll closings, CNN calls Rhode Island, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York for Obama and North Dakota and Wyoming for McCain. New electoral vote projection: CNN: Obama 174 | McCain 49
To sum up, NBC's electoral college projects: Obama 175 | McCain 76
Obama: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, NH, NJ, NY, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Michigan, RI, and Wisconsin
McCain: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, ND, Oklahoma, SC, Tennessee, and Wyoming
Florida is still too close to call (Obama is leading by a little more than 200,000 votes) as is North Carolina (Obama's lead is a little over 129,000). Virginia is another too-close-to-call - McCain leads by over 65,000 votes.
8:58 p.m.: CNN calls Pennsylvania for Obama, Alabama for McCain. CNN: Obama 102 | McCain 43
8:36 p.m.: NBC News calls NH for Obama and calls Georgia and Alabama for McCain, giving Obama has 103 electoral votes and McCain 58. CNN's estimates are more conservative, saying Obama has 81 electoral votes (they didn't call PA yet) and 34 for McCain. Electoral vote projections: NBC: Obama 103 | McCain 58 // CNN: 81 | McCain 34
Additionally, it's projected that Elizabeth Dole will lose her Senate race in North Carolina.
8:00 p.m.: CNN is projecting that Obama will carry Massachusetts, Illinois, Connecticut, New Jersey, Maine, Deleware, Maryland, and D.C., with McCain carrying Tennessee, Oklahoma and South Carolina. And Obama currently has 77 electoral votes to McCain's 34. Meanwhile, NBC is calling Pennsylvania for Obama.
7:53 p.m.: NBC News projects that McCain is the winner of South Carolina, according to a cell phone text alert.
7:05 p.m.: NBC News projects that McCain wins Kentucky and Obama wins Vermont.
The polls have closed in Indiana and Kentucky and they are closing in Georgia, South Carolina, and Virgina at 7 p.m.
Some media outlets may call the election before voting is completed across the country--CBS News vice president Paul Friedman told the NY Times, "We could know Virginia at 7. We could know Indiana before 8. We could know Florida at 8. We could know Pennsylvania at 8. We could know the whole story of the election with those results. We can’t be in this position of hiding our heads in the sand when the story is obvious."
Well, it could still be a long night (NY State's polls don't close until 9 p.m., and we've got a big State Senate race to watch for). And this is the time to enjoy statistics and projections and learning about various counties in swing states! The NY Times has great interactive maps for a number of races--and they drill down to the county level. Also check out FiveThirtyEight.com's Election Night Thread. 270toWin.com has the interactive electoral map so you can come up with different combinations to reach 270, but the site has been experiencing understandably heavy traffic.

What about Nader, Barr, McKinney and Baldwin?
#1 don't you know? 3rd parties don't exist, we only get TWO options and that is it. Vote either for Obama or Mc Cain ONLY and bow to your master Slave!
Anyone who could vote for Mccain after Bush F-UCKS up the country for 8 years should be deported to Iraq or put in jail for treason.
Looks like McCain is putting his ballot in the blue (paper?) recycling bin, while Cindy has her eye on the red (metal?) one.
Some sources are beginning to call Penn for Obama. He's going to win this thing.
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/815-pm-update.html
Obama won PA!
Obama wins NH!
Kerry won NH and PA in 2004 as well. I'll get excited when FL, CO, NM, and OH come in.
It's a republican Massacre! the bodies are flying and the democrats are scalping the shit out of the red states. It's over before it even began. I thought McCain would bring it but his campaign was so limp, flaccid, and impotent that he'd need a republican penis pump hail mary to even make this respectable. This is not a landslide. It's an avalanche!
#2 Shinobi Shaw - yeah. I familiar with the media only representing two political parties. That's one of the reasons I left journalism. The media is a joke.
ABC projects Ohio for Obama! It's over! As if we needed any more proof.
Why are people being so suspenseful? It's obvious Obama will win by a landslide.
And I voted for 3rd party yet I can see this clear as day.
Watching all these number fly by your face with all these charts and these fucking computer maps is way too confusing. I'm gonna party in Times Square like it's 1776. Here's Keith Olbermann skeeting in your face Ides of March.
lol @ McCain voting for Obama in that pic!
The McCain Victory party looks as if someone spiked the punch with Digitalis. Whatta bunch of creeps.
Palin/McCain will pull this off, even if it goes to the Supreme Court, and Scalia will decide the election again! All the liberal media will backtrack and put their feet in their collective mouths!
Palin/McCain 2008
I hold the party until after 11 pm, if you don't mind. It's tighter than I imagined it'd be on the popular vote...
But I'm psyched that it's going one way so early! Still, must remain calm.
The news media isn't calling it, but I don't see how anyone thinks McCain could still win -- he'd have to win California, Oregon, or Washington. (On top of every other undecided state, of course.) In 20 years, no Republican has won any of those three states. I guess the other vague possibility is that there could be a state "uncalled" (i.e. Florida in 2000), but barring that...
Guys...I think it's over.
CNN just said it's impossible for McCain to win...
Obama wins New Mexico!
fuck yeah! The cool aid kept the republicans OUT!
Ok -- to clarify that (because it was unnecessarily confusing and confused): Obama need only win CA, OR, and WA at this point to get to 270, and in 20 years those states have always gone solidly Dem. So...unless this year is somehow different...
Anyone who could vote for Mccain after Bush F-UCKS up the country for 8 years should be deported to Iraq or put in jail for treason.
I didn't vote for McCain but I can tell that Bush and McCain are two separate people. Anyone that thinks like you should ask for the $1.50 you spent on your education. Obviously you can't do anything more than regurgitate sound bites.
Funny thing though is that now the pressure is even higher on the Democrats to perform because come 2010 the people that simply voted Democrat to vote against Bush are going to have a wandering eye.
It's pretty obvious that people like you are going to blame for Bush for every failure of the next administration. Change indeed.
[13] We're just a little giddy, is all. After the nightmares of 2000 and 2004, you'll have to forgive us if we get a little "drunk" with an electoral massacre of Republican candidates, especially in the presidential race. Eight years is a long time to wait for sweet vindication.
No surprises.
^ Some of us are literally drunk! I filled the fridge with Czechvar and with each swing state Obama wins....Swig State!
Don't underestimate the powah of de Terminatah.
obama's got 206 votes. it's over. You can guarantee that he'll get california's 50 and seattle and oregon. IT'S OVER! I hope all you republican dickheads who voted for Bush twice feel as bad as I did in 00 and 04 with you new black prez. George Bush was responsible for America's first black president.
It's pretty obvious that people like you are going to blame for Bush for every failure of the next administration. Change indeed.
EastRiver, its a long held tradition to blame the previous party for at least the first year of the new administration's term. This is why I didn't blame Bush for 9/11, nor for the dot com fallout. But:
Iraq - Bush's call
Torturing in Guantanamo and CIA black sites - Bush's call
Wiretapping American civilians - Bush's call
Loss of opportunity post-9/11 to rally the world to America's side - Bush's call
I won't even discuss the housing crisis and subsequent economic fallout, which was also on his watch.
Enough already.
don't give all the credit to Bush. Palin's nomination helped a lot!
Idiocy became the badge of honor for Republicans.
Please break my losing streak, it sucks to vote for a loser since freshman year of college.
All the mistakes this administration has made will undoubtedly affect the upcoming president, no matter who he is.
Bush has been in the White House for 8 years, most of the problems this nation is facing right now are direct consequences of his policies. What do you expect? A pat on Bush's back after he hands it over?
All these problems will not be solved in 4 years either. I hope people realize that, if Obama wins it's not a magical potion that will make everything right after 3 months. This mess will take a lot of hard work.
#31- While palin helped she was no force of Nature like George Bush. Obama did not transcend race, but Bush did. Every motherfucking person on the planet regardless of race, creed, social standing hates that motherfucker. My parents, who are crazy ass racist against african americans, even voted for obama cause bush fucked up so badly. Bush has finally united the country AGAINST him. CNN polls had everyone hating Bush.
If the McCain aids are saying it's hopeless.... maybe I should go down to the grocery store and buy some juicy vodka for meself... whooop!
Remember, a vote for Obama is a vote against the state of Israel!
Go Obama!
(hehe)
McCain is ready to concede:
PRESIDENT OBAMA!
CNN says Obama has more tha enough votes to win....
OBAMA!LET'S WELLCOME THE FUTURE!
BabyH: Agree, WFuknBush was the worse that happen to the leadership of ANY NATION!
Let's welcome the future!
OBAMA is the future.
I demand a recount! Restart the voting machines, there are many Republicans who haven't voted yet!!
Oh, the sweet scent of denial...
People are setting off fireworks in my neighborhood! People are on the roofs screaming and applauding! GOBAMA!
Change!
Amazing times! I feel satisfied.
To the Gothamist trolls:
suck on it.
My fellow Americans. Our long national nightmare is over.
ABC says Florida it's Obama, so are 333 votes.
McCain is saying he congratulated Obama... MORE PARTY!
Iraq - Bush's call
Torturing in Guantanamo and CIA black sites - Bush's call
Wiretapping American civilians - Bush's call
Loss of opportunity post-9/11 to rally the world to America's side - Bush's call
Exactly. Bush's call. Not McCain's call.
I won't even discuss the housing crisis and subsequent economic fallout, which was also on his watch.
Right again. On Bush's watch. Although I think Wall Street is responsible for about 90 percent of this mess.
Funny how you didn't hear any Democrats getting worried in the 90s when Wall Street was getting over inflated on easy money. Americans were borrowing from abroad. Imports soared which kept inflation down but nobody gave a crap because the Nasdaq was at 5000. Same forces at work but it didn't explode until 2007.
Alright, Obama is the 44th President of the USA! Congrats to you liberals, let's see how what the next 4 years will bring, now with Democrats controlling both houses of Congress. Obama has no one else to blame if he messes up. Let's hope we are not taxed to the poor house before his 1 term is up.
Palin 2012!!!
Mac's tail is between his legs right now! he's conceding live..
^ You're already in the intellectual poorhouse. Go climb back into your coffin.
I'm not that familiar with American politics but if the blue states win can they rape and pillage the red states?
McCain certainly seems well rehearsed in his concession speech. very disconcerting for republicans (HAAHHAHA)
^ Nanny nanny nanny, YOU go crawl back into the shitty toilet you crawled out from, don't deceive yourself into thinking YOU are an intellectual, doucher
and now if only Palin will crawl back to Alaska and stay there and never ever appear again! please dear god, thank you
Thank God.
What a great night.
"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
May his soul rest in peace.
YES! DEMOCRATS RULE!!!
@gimme, Sorry, I meant the post above yours. Lots of furious little fingers tonight! Dude69, go crawl back into that coffin you share with Ides Of March and HUGO_MEGO.
"Thank God.
What a great night."
Priceless
I think that we can all agree that the best part of his election is that HUGO MEGO can go crawl back into his mother's basement apartment from whence his foul stench came.
we did it!!!!!!!!
I feel like I've awaken from a nightmare
You really have to ask yourself what were the republicans thinking when they brought Tina Fey, oops I meant Sarah Palin, into this exercise in poor choices. Did they think just because Hillary made a good showing, that America wanted a female up there as a running mate? What a bunch of idiots!
OK! Now let's get our troops out of Iraq.Let the savages over there kill themselves off one by one. Perhaps the women over there will smarten up and stop having sex with those sand ....... so the problem doesn't continue for another 4,000 years.
fuck it was so good seeing republicans at the mccain concession turn green at the thought of a black president
to all my brothers and sisters: here we go!
to my lily-white daughters: here we go!
lets go!!!
I have reason to live for tomorrow and throw away that bullet with my name on it.

send your "in your face" messages here, yeah, that's right
I'm not that familiar with American politics but if the blue states win can they rape and pillage the red states?
They already did. First Wall Street sucked America dry and then Washington bailed them out. The line about the blue states paying most of the taxes got blown up since the taxes were based on salaries that were based on borrowed money.
What is it with all these people saying he is black? The guys more white than black. Who raised him? Not his father that's for sure. Get over this and move on. In these times he is the better man to do the job then the other guy. Four more years of the same thing we have seen for the last six is not a solution.
We put a brother in the White House! Yes we did! And now let's see him put himself on Mount Rushmore!
damn, I am happy Obama won but I wanted maltese and Stainere (republicans) to win and now pardavan is hanging by a thread. Definitely Governor Paterson will legalize Gay marriages now which must please babyhitler.
From now on, no more whining that race stopped anyone from achieving anything.
damn I wanted change but why NY senate and assembly controlled by democrats as well. they will legalize gay marriages in NYC. I wanted change but not sex change.
GW BUSH has just been toppled like that famous statue of Saddam in Bagdad !!!!!
(sounds of merry ak's firing into the air)
bittersweet victory. I am happy Obama won but why democrats as Michael McMahon and Abbato who are rotten win the senate. Now Gov. Patterson will legalize Gay Marriages in NYS. Damn, that is not good at all.
send your "in your face" messages here, yeah, that's right
Good thing Obama has class to spare when he has people like you backing him.
What a speech Obama gave! If he lives up to half that promise, get ready to blast some rock in South Dakota.
I don't think the issue of gay marriages is really effecting our lives as much as other pressing issues such as health care, decreasing the tax burden on the middle class, education etc. etc. etc.
@nik13 I agree. I guess now those that thought the whites were holding them back is kind of up for grabs right now.
YES WE CAN!
Now, shut up and grow up, racist a-holes. The future is now.
Congratulations, President-Elect Obama.
Now don't suck.
agreed with nik13 as well.
What a great speech. We are hopeful things will be better.
The eyes of the world are upon you. I pray you don't fail.
in his speech tonight Obama said "it might not even happen in one term" alluding to great changes - he's giving himself a loooottt of leeway there, however yes he does have a lot of shit to sweep up from the past 8 years
http://www.theonion.com/content/news/nation_finally_shitty_enough_to
YAY!
It started to feel like an Oscar-winning rally speech, but then got real again. I
#72- you should be happy that there are gay people around dude. If you live next to them your property values skyrocket. If they get married can you imagine the drapes they would buy? I bet they'd be so amazing that your home would triple in value by just being near their decorating skills. ps- jesus loves dick.
Like I said earlier, I don't think most of these problem will be solved in 4 years either.
There are a lot of deep problems here, it takes planning and vision to take steps towards a solution. Even if you make the right choice tomorrow, it may take 2/3 years to really see a difference.
We are hoping he has the vision to stop the downward spiral and start making those changes to will benefit us on the long term.
The Cult of Obama has spoken. THE ONE has been elected. Believe of die. Kool-Aid will be served tomorrow.
Gee. So surprised he didn't invite Wright and Ayers and Bin Laden up there.
It'll be great to see the opposition have to eat their foolish, evil words. This man ran a clean campaign on the issues. He didn't attack. He inspired.
Is he a great leader? He's lead. But will he be an amazing president? Who knows. But here's hoping...but at least we finally have some hope.
no babyhitler, it is quite obvious you like dick. it explains a lot.
if they lived in my block, i would see condoms on the streets and men sodomizing in the allies. Thanks but no thanks. I leave that to you babyhitler since it is your thing. is babyhitler, the name your companions uses to refer to your small penis? i can understand why you take the lord's name in vain since you are damn forever. sick and sad.
Union Square is going NUTS full of Obama revelers. Some quick video as folks started pouring in and a giant flag was unfurled: http://www.rikomatic.com/blog/2008/11/yes-we-did-goba.html
in chicago you retards
oh and here is me with the most beautful woman ever

#91- that's very christian of you. Jesus not only loves dirty sanchez's, cleveland steamer's and donkey punch's but he loves it when he's boning 8 apostle's at once double anal style.
Barack Obama as our 44th president...I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. I never thought I'd see this in my lifetime. My mother, as a little girl, had to use "For Colored Only" restrooms, and less than 100 years later, this! This is the dawn of a new America.
i am usually not the most emotional of people but tonight was a night i'll never forget. i joined a large crowd of people outside of columbia around 116th and broadway shortly after the results were announced, we then paraded up broadway and across 125th street. i have never seen so much happiness in all my life. everyone screaming, random strangers hugging and high-fiving, families banging pots and pans out of their windows, trucks and buses and POLICE CARS honking and waving. i had chills the whole time. i hope to see the videos and pictures that will no doubt flood the internet soon.
So now that the Obamessiah has been elected, when can I expect my first welfare check?
Stupid Americans... two terms of Bush followed up by an empty sycophant who gives a good speech. We're beyond fucked.
Counting down the days until his inevitable impeachment (which will of course be blamed on race).
HAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a dream come true. Thank you America. I am proud to be an American, finally. We still have a lot of work to do. Tonight we celebrate, we rest, we dream. Tomorrow, we work.
you're not raining on my parade, frihole
I just crossed off the bullet with my name on it with yours.
oh, and #15 FTW btw

YAY OBAMA!!!
WE'RE FINALLY HERE and it feels great!
Just so Dude69 and Hugo_Mego/Bingo_Ramirez know, you are gigantic cunts. Please keep quiet now.
i'm just happy obama has more grace and class then most of you fools. as he talks about healing divides and moving on, most of you immature mental midgets are acting like second graders that just won a kickball game.
felixthecat... your hatred amuses and scares me.
I'm surprised how happy this election makes me. I thought I was a jaded, middle-aged NYer. But voting last night, as I pulled the lever indicating my vote for Obama, I realized how much we've grown as a nation. I was born before there was a civil rights amendment. I was born in a time when blacks and whites had seperate facilities. Yes, I grew up in NY, so my family didn't see it, but it was a reality. Today, we have a president-elect who represents so many people's hopes. As I jew, I dream of the day when a jew will be accepted as a candidate. I am sad that a woman, the candidate that I thought was better qualified, didn't get her party's nomination. But I am elated that our nation was able to see past race and elect Obama, and that my children got to see it happen.
Beautiful speeches, well written and executed by a colorful and charismatic man now president elect of the united states of America. there is no question whatsoever many people feel a great sense of hope for unity and change by the election of Barack Obama. In the words of Barack himself, the time has now come for YOU Americans to be volunteers and progressive activists in Americas future. the time is now for YOU to do something as America faces very severe problems in economy, war, global warming and more.
My opinion, in my 19 straight months on the net amongst all the Americans as i try desperately to uncover my science experiments to end global warming-war for oil- alleviate costs for energy- I have found no Hope and assistance from fellow Americans. I believe the change all ask for is because they all know inside something is very wrong all around them- it is YOU. YOU are the problem, and YOU are the solution. In my opinion America drifted into an atheistic secular dog eat dog attitude towards one another and may the best man win.
To all who have shed a tear for Obama win in the feeling of hope and change, here is your chance. i don’t want your money, just your actions as an American trying to find a solution for our country. I risked my life to hand build and survive a one million volt experiment for all of us. I feel successful and the only way to be proven true is to have my dangerous experiment repeated by a credible university for truth. Since it is very dangerous and only several universities even have the proper equipment, i have narrowed it down to Princeton university to provoke.
If you care for a possible solution to alleviate most of the crisis president elect Obama is running for, if not the world, pressure Princeton university(or something you feel) and do something. I try everyday and it is ridiculous and disheartening the amount of no support but rather abuse and ridicule for people who try.
Your choice. Free will. do something for all of us and we all win. do nothing for all of us and the problems get worse. Here is YOUR chance to implement change- what will you do.
sincerely
Solomon Azar-19 months to a deaf non caring america-what has changed?
seen/scene at Harlem last night - amazing !
Wow, all of the anti-Obama people are racist homophones and not very smart. Thank goodness I am on the winning team!
