On a very windy day, Paula Radcliffe, last year's ING NYC Marathon winner, won the women's race today with a time of 2:23:556. Radcliffe had looked to the NYC Marathon as her redemption, after a stress fracture earlier this year and a 23rd place finish at the Beijing Olympics. Second place winner was 40-year-old Ludmila Petrova, the 2000 winner, at 2:25:43
Kara Goucher finished third (2:25:53), the first American woman in 14 years to place in the marathon--and this was her very first marathon. Goucher was born in Queens, but her family moved from New York soon after her father was killed by a drunk driver in 1982. She told the Daily News her mother and sisters would be cheering for her, "This is a very big deal for my family, a lot more so than the Olympics. It's where we were all born and grew up and began our lives together. Just knowing that they're here kind of makes everything more complete for me."
And just now, Brazilian Marilson Gomes dos Santos, who won in 2006, won the men's race with a time of 2:08:43. Second place finished is Abderrahim Goumri of Morocco; Goumri also finished second last year. Daniel Rono of Kenya finished third (2:11:22) and previous marathon winner Paul Targat, also of Kenya, finished fourth (2:13:10).
Gomes dos Santos said the crowds in Central Park really inspired him to keep going and to overtake the lead at Central Park South. Check out the NY Times' blog about the men's race.

It's rather amusing that the top women finishers get more media attention than the top men, even though the men are considerably faster.
Well, the women finished first.
Peter: Seriously? Is it really that amusing to you? Is it so hard for you to see the joy in this outstanding event without immediately trying to point out what you feel is wrong with it?
Jesus, dude, f'in lighten up already. In a world where men get most of the attention, can't you just let this one go?
Keep it to yourself next time.
I find all the runners completely outstanding—male, female, legless, whatever. Amazing people.
yo, #3, don't get your panties in a bunch
did the women finish first because the started first?
and mihow, relax. the "media attention" is a local blog posting.
just spent three hours cheering in BK. i f'in luv this city.
I think the marathon is one of the best spectator events in NYC. It's really fun to see how many people from all over the world come to run NY. I never miss it.
#1- It's cause they aren't kenyan or morrocan or south african and can speak english.
There's nothing wrong with celebrating the accomplishments of the women who compete, not by any means. Running a marathon is a huge accomplishment for anyone. What is a bit odd - not wrong, just odd - is giving much more attention to the women's winner.
To Babyhitler....The writer of the article was clearly writing this item as the marathon was happening, so had more time to focus on the Women. When you read it you can see this. I hate conspiracy idiots like yourself.
Anyway well done Paula, the best British long distance runner of our generation, Male or Female.
I like kara goucher, a nyc success story,
leave NYC and success! was rooting for her during the televised olympic trials.
I don't like watching the televised nyc marathon because I think al trautwig is a dikhead.
but I did watch the Team NOVA/Tufts NOVA show on regular people training for the Boston marathon.
#10- I was rooting for Kara Goucher not cause she was white and american and could speak english but cause she's physically attractive, ie hot.
Sorry, folks. I was very moved when I got home today from cheering them on. I wanted to keep with that joy. :]
Panties aren't in a bunch. Promise. Just loving the city as well today.
Congratulations to all the volunteers that help make this such a world-class event. To all the folks who ran in the middle of the pack, good show. Got to help my kids hand out some Gatorade today. I never stop being thankful I get to live here. Oh, and at the risk of being really crude, Kara Goucher, you are awfully cute.
Goucher is also married to another runner. next year let's get Lolo jones to run.
I miss Rosa Mota who had those massive brillo pads in her armpits. A supreme runner and a social revolutionary!
The marathon is the most New York event of the year.
