When I taught the attendance for Halloween was usually about 30% of usual. Parents were afraid to send their kids to school because they knew we couldn't protect them.

Good grief. This is still going on? Why can't everyone just dress up like hos and pimps and be done with it? Back when we were NYC public school kids, we were always scared to go to school on Halloween. There was a lot of rotten egg tossing (the bodegas in the area stopped selling eggs to minors around Hween so the eggs were old.) Mostly I was afraid of the kids who would come in with Nair to smear in people's hair. For some reason this was my worst nightmare back then. (That and throwing up in public. But I got over that in college.)
