Plaza's Oak Room Poised to Reopen After Face Lift

Originally designed by Plaza Hotel architect Henry Hardenbergh in 1907 as a men’s bar, The Oak Room closed during Prohibition and re-opened in 1934 as a full-service restaurant. The interior is a city Landmark, as is the Plaza Hotel, which reopened in March (after extensive renovations) as a hotel and luxury condominium, where some tenants complain of loneliness. The Palm Court, that other famous eatery in The Plaza, also reopened in March to derisive reviews from Bloomberg News and the Post.

It's anyone's guess whether the food at The Oak Room will fare any better with critics, but the hiring of acclaimed chef Joël Antunes (winner of the 2005 James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Southeast) bodes well. And one can imagine the bar's old money, clubby charm resonating with New Yorkers' atavistic speakeasy fixation. Architect Annabelle Selldorf handled the touch-up, custom-designing "virtually everything" from the leather tables and the new copper finish atop The Oak Bar to the mohair banquettes in The Oak Room. Mmm, mohair. The photos speak for themselves; who wants to buy us a Manhattan? It opens November 8th. Click through for the elaborate cocktail menu.

Eh... I'm a bit iffy on the decor. I like a touch of mid-century style, but it looks strangely anachronistic against the ornate woodwork and gilt trim here.

I know it's the Plaza, but $18 for a cocktail? Seriously?

Yeah, somebody thinks 1966 is the height of taste and style. It looks like an "Olde English Chop House" along Rt 1.

dude, what did they do to it? it looks so so no-brow, except for the green chairs which are atrocious.

#2, not crap!

HAVING FIRST ENJOYED THE OAK ROOM AND THE OAK BAR 38 YEARS AGO, I LOOK FORWARD TO MY NEXT VISIT. FOR DECOR AND PRICE CRITICS, THERE'S ALWAYS TGI FRIDAYS.

^ Say hi to Flo the waitress and ask her for me if pichers of Whiskey Sours are still $8.

the hell with the Oak room... bring back the old Trader Vics Circa 1979 and order me up a poo poo platter and a Mai Tai

uh oh I meant pu pu... Damn

The Oak Room was always elegant and beautiful and a very special place to enjoy fine food. Certainly not for everyone, but if you can afford this, it's an experience you will remember.
