Big Broadway News, People! Guys and Dolls! Hedda! West Side!

2008_10_laureng.jpgIt was announced today that the upcoming Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls will star Gilmore Girls actress Lauren Graham! She'll be making her Broadway debut as Miss Adelaide, the fiancée of Nathan Detroit, to be played by Oliver Platt. The Frank Loesser musical originally debuted in 1950; it'll be back in February. In other Broadway casting news, Michael Cerveris and the Off Broadway favorite Paul Sparks have joined the cast of Christopher Shinn's "new interpretation" of Henrik Ibsen's Hedda Gabler at the Roundabout in January. Mary-Louise Parker will play the title role, with Cerveris as her boring husband and Sparks as his academic rival. Also, the less boldface casting was just announced for the anticipated revival of West Side Story in February.

Is there really anyone out there who cares about this?

I care. I had no idea that Mary Louise Parker and the mother from the Gilmore Girls were different people.

How many different versions of this musical do audiences need? I had to sing the songs in elementary school music class, and they drive me batty now with their dumb, sticks-in-your-head-all-day, sing-song simplicity.

Good one, KiljoyWasHere.

Well, Arthur Laurents--who wrote the book for West Side Story--is directing WSS. And he just directed the revival of Gypsy.

Revival, revival, and revival.

These plus the 100 new musicals based on schlocky movies...

I'm so glad Spring Awakening, [title of show] and Passing Strange have/had to close to make room for this "new" material. Any over/under on how long In The Heights will last now?

Mike Daisey's How Theater Failed America covered this subject perfectly.

I'm primed to see West Side Story but only if the music is live. I have no desire to watch karaoke done to a backing track of Bernstein. To use recorded music is to dishonor one of the finest scores in all of Broadway history (if not the finest).

gilmore girl yes. Oliver Platt as sky masterson? wtf?

Damn. And here I was hoping Mary-Louise Parker was playing Hedda Nussbaum.

babyhitler--Platt is playing Nathan Detroit. Casting for Masterson has not yet been announced.
