Pencil This In

dotherightthing.jpgFILM: Tonight Danny Glover and other special guests will pay tribute to the late St. Clair Bourne by introducing a screening of his film Making Do the Right Thing. The documentary naturally has plenty of 80s Bed-Stuy shots, with insights from the director as well as locals; more details here.

PANEL: Tonight SVA "brings the spirit of street art inside, with a panel of New York City-based artists and observers for a conversation about the state of street art today, moderated by artist and SVA faculty member Amy Wilson, whose politically-charged work was at the center of the controversy surrounding the Drawing Center’s move to Ground Zero. The panelists will discuss the history of street art, how art and business have blurred on the city streets, and what recent mainstream attention means for the art form—is it a blessing or a curse? The panelists include: Marc and Sara Schiller, Wooster Collective; Thomas Beale, Honey Space; and ELBOW-TOE, street artist." More details here.

THEATER: Playwright and performer Mike Daisey—currently the lone member of the elite Gothamist three time interview club—is back at the Public Theater with his new solo show If You See Something Say Something. His previous hit, How Theater Failed America, hilariously skewered (among other things) the theater nerd obsession with Times critic Charles Isherwood. So it's mildly amusing that today the Ish himself weighs in on Daisey's latest opus, which "investigates the secret history of the Department of Homeland Security through the untold story of the father of the neutron bomb and a personal pilgrimage to the Trinity blast site." Isherwood calls it, "absorbing if uneven...But when Mr. Daisey circles back to his quiet obsession with the A-bomb, you get hooked again." – John Del Signore

MUSIC: The Legendary Pink Dots are back in NYC for the night, and we're told the "Anglo-Dutch experimental rock band formed in London in August 1980. Although far outside the mainstream (in terms of their music and career path), LPD have released more than 40 albums, have a devoted worldwide following and tour continuously." Rolling Stone said they have "created some of the most enigmatic and
challenging compositions in modern music.”

8 p.m. // Knitting Factory [74 Leonard St] // $20
