Last Night's Action: Another Win

  • Rangers 3 Pittsburgh 2 (Shootout): Those are two very-satisfying points the Rangers earned Saturday night. Trailing 2-0 entering the third, New York mounted a furious attack, outshooting Pittsburgh 18-2 in the final period and tying the game with only 8.1 seconds left in the period thanks to Nikolai Zherdev’s goal. After a scoreless overtime, the teams went to a shootout.

The first two shooters from each team failed to score, setting up a sudden-death situation. Frderik Sjostrom just snuck a backhand into the net to put the Rangers up, but Pittsburgh had Sidney Crosby left to shoot. Crosby skated towards the net and tried to get Lundqvist to commit with a move off the forehand, before flipping the puck around to his backhand to score. But, Lundqvist stayed with the puck the whole way and stuffed Crosby’s attempt to give the Rangers another victory.

  • Philadelphia 3 Devils 2 (OT): New Jersey had a rough weekend against the Flyers, losing both games they played. Brian Gionta scored late in the second period to tie things at two, but both teams locked down on defense in the third and the game went to overtime. Jeff Carter deflected the puck into the net in OT to give Philadelphia the win.
  • Carolina 4 Islanders 3: Carolina jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never trailed. New York had an incredible 60 shots on goal, but could only score three times against Cam Ward who truly earned his paycheck Saturday.

I would say that this game was a very entertaining one. Despite the rangers captain being snakebit, Tom Renney's new lines played well enough to limit the Penguins to 2 total shots on net in the 3rd period.

I disagree with the premise that the rangers didn't deserve the win, because Pittsburg clearly went into a shell in the 3rd. Playing the prevent defense is often a guarantee of losing. Unless you are the Detroit Red Wings...

I would further add that Pittsburgh is already well known for tanking seasons in order to pick up all star caliber players such as Mario Lemieux and now Sidney Crosby/Evegeni Malkin.

I wonder where justice is because the Rangers did not deserve this win.
