Pedestrian Fatally Struck on Bowery

2008_10_18wh.jpgWe're hearing reports that a pedestrian at Bowery, near Grand, in Chinatown was fatally hit by an 18-wheeler. The 18-wheeler may have tried to flee the scene, as the truck went over the Manhattan Bridge. The truck was stopped on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and the investigation is ongoing. A few months ago, a few blocks away on Canal, a speeding truck hit a bus, which then fatally hit a pedestrian on a sidewalk. And earlier today, an elderly woman was fatally hit by a car at 75th St and 14th Ave in Brooklyn; the car fled the scene.

Truckstop speed is a helluva drug.

The whole area near the Manhattan Bridge is a pedestrian and cycling horror.

Avoid at all costs. Especially if you don't have insurance. And go to Flushing for real chinese food.

Actually, this guy got hit in almost the same spot an old lady did earlier in the year (not the one that's linked).

    That was another mess.

    Blech.

  • The Edge

I couldn't tell if the guy was white or not, I didn't see him before he got hit.

The whole area near the Manhattan Bridge is a pedestrian and cycling horror. They should limit parking in that area from 9-5 to delivery trucks only, because the double, and occasionally triple parking absurd.

just heard eyewitness accounts, something about a tractor trailer hitting another car or car door.

some good Samaritans chased the driver.

    gruesome scene, Caucasian victim.

  • The Edge

The guy parked his minivan in front of Congee (not Congee Bowery), he stepped out, and the truck came and splattered him all over the place.

The guy wasn't a jaywalking--as far as I know--and it wasn't early morning, maybe around 1:45ish. No, he wasn't double parked.

And yes, I work across the street.

"(also, cops park their personal vehicles all over the sidewalks right at Canal and the bridge).

The NYPD should really enforce parking and speeding there."

    Am I missing something here?

  • JoHonnyBoy

Where are the reports coming from? Could you provide a source?

I used to ride my bike down the Bowery to/from the Manhattan Bridge, but after many close calls, I changed my route. Between all of the potholes, illegally parked cars, jaywalkers, and speeding, that area is a nightmare (also, cops park their personal vehicles all over the sidewalks right at Canal and the bridge).

The NYPD should really enforce parking and speeding there.

Shit. I live on Bowery right near Hester. I take the 6th from Canal though, so I didn't see anything this morning.
