33 Poodles Found in Queens Home

phpuKtHi2PM.jpgOne Queens couple was busted by the ASPCA yesterday when it was discovered they were housing 33 poodles. The NY Post reports on the world's cutest infestation (with a photo gallery!), saying animal rescuers were called to the elderly owner's home and noted that the dog's conditions were "deteriorating quickly." One rescuer told the paper: "I can't even describe what it was like in there. This was 33 dogs in one home, they weren't going outside and they weren't being walked." The couple isn't facing criminal charges, and one poodle going back to the owners as a pet. The rest of the dogs are now "being groomed and given care at the center before being put up for adoption."

If I had one of those puppies I would probably find myself breeding 30 more of them and not stopping until my apartment was crawling ceiling to floor with cute, white, fluffiness. Yeah, I can see how things got out of control there.

When you buy from a breeder you are funding cruelty. They breed dogs for money and are kept in horrible conditions and discarded if they are not appealing to the humans eyes.

Actually, in my experience with a breeder, I got to visit the person's house and the conditions were anything but horrible. She was raising a single litter. The sire had been carefully chosen and the pups screened by a vet. I think you have a one-size-fits-all vision of breeders that is not accurate.

Mutts are the best dogs and they need a home.

You should be mad at the people who didn't bother to fix their dogs. It's their fault the mutt is in the shelter in the first place. I think we would agree that anybody who produces an unwanted dog is an asshole (including these people in Queens.)

In another paper, these owners breed them but were unable to sell them. Also in a pet shelter, most of these dogs are mutts and were abandoned or born on the streets. It is wrong to fund these puppy mills. People should adopt dogs in shelter. A lot of pure breeds have genetic defects. Mutts are the best dogs and they need a home. When you buy from a breeder you are funding cruelty. They breed dogs for money and are kept in horrible conditions and discarded if they are not appealing to the humans eyes. Dogs are not accessories. Shame on people. Poor Dogs

It must have been very fun to be in that house with 33 pups.

the point is that too many people breed animals for money and too many people buy pure breeds and fund this cycle of cruelty.

Actually, I think it's unfair to blame breeders en masse. When done responsibly and professionally, buying directly from a breeder can be the best way to sustain responsible dog ownership. (A good breeder will actually interview a customer to see if they are suitable dog owners, and a typical "pet" contract requires one to spay or neuter the dog.)

If you think about the dogs in shelters, they are much more likely to be a pet store purchase gone wrong or produced by accident. From the story here it is not clear that the people were even breeding for money, just that they somehow produced a lot of unwanted dogs though sheer incompetence.
