City Council to Vote on Term Limits Thursday

2008_10_mayobelmo.jpgThe speculation on how the City Council members will vote on extending term limits will end on Thursday, because the Council will vote on the matter then. NY1 relays its latest tally of support: 17 for extending term limits, 21 against, and 13 undecided (the measure needs 26 votes to pass).

A new Quinnipiac University Poll shows that voters want to decide on the term limits issue. And then there are the billionaires who want to keep term limits in tact in some way or another. Ronald Lauder who supports a third term for Mayor Bloomberg, tells the NY Times "he would vigorously oppose allowing council members now serving their first term to remain in office for three terms"--which could conceivably influence how members vote.

Then there's Tom Golisano, with his $1.6 billion net worth, who formally announced he'd "bankroll" the effort to stop the extension of term limits with newspaper, radio and TV ads, "To maintain the spirit of democracy, there should be at least another public referendum." Newsday reports that Bloomberg said of Golisano's cash, "Well, if he spends a lot of money in New York City, I think that's wonderful, the advertisement business isn't all that good at the moment. If he wants to spend his money, that's fine." To which Golisano said, "I have no idea if they are taking me seriously or not, but I think it's a really serious issue." Yes-- billionaire battle! As City Council member Letitia James said, "The best way to deal with a billionaire is to get another billionaire!"

City council people don't have to vote. Bloomberg might loose this one because it'll be safer for coucilmembers to abstain than take a position.

Bloomberg soils the good name of Elmo.

@sinister, don't be so certain, there are 9 votes needed and 13 undecided. We need at least 5 council members to go against Bloomberg. The 13 undecided include Michael McMahon, Simcha Felder, Gale Brewer and Jessica Lappin that rubberstamp everything Quinn does. Please call your council members stop the hijacking of democracy.

Elmo said to Bloomberg " I want to just say, I DON'T love you

"And then there are the billionaires who want to keep term limits in tact in some way or another."

"Intact" is one word.

Elmo said to Bloomberg, "You're a total asshole."

Lauder and Galisano are two right-wing billionaires, one a Republican, the other a Conservative. Ef 'em

Galisano had Conservative Party Chair, Michael Long, at this side yesterday when announcing he would bankroll the opposition to extend term limits.
These creeps oppose Choice, Gay rights, are anti-Union, support Bush, etc.

Moreover, Galisano is from upstate. What is TL to him, except an excuse to break the power of the Democratic Party in the city. Notice he is not doing it statewide or countrywide.

Anything they support, progressives should oppose!

There is too much opposition against Bloomberg and Quinn for them to win. The NY Bar Assoc, Human Rights groups, housing activists and anyone that hasn't been bribed by Bloomberg is against the Council changing the term limits.

I don't even want to see this got to referendum. Why? Spite. I don't even want to give Bloomberg and Lauder the satisfaction of having a chance to change term limits.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens after the vote shoots down Bloomberg's attempt. Quinn will get hit hard. After congestion pricing failed, people at City Hall ratted out Quinn's slush fund. Everyone thought she was going to be done. It's funny that after coming close to losing everything, Quinn still sides with Bloomberg. Unbelievable. If congestion pricing did pass, Bloomberg's ass would have be ran out of NYC like Mayor Livingston of London was ran out of office.

BILLIONAIRE RON BLOOMBERG cuz he couldn't 'buy' the presidency or the NY gubernatorial title - and he certainly could not get rid of SENATURTD CHUCK'the-schmuck'SCHUMER or SENATURD HILLARY wearing her "...asbestos pants-suits" to hide all her 'UGLINESS/CORRUPTION' - was left with 'buying/coercing' the doofuses on the NYC CITY COUNCIL. SORTA LIKE CHOOSING 'USEFUL IDIOTS' FOR A BOUGHT JURY!!!
