Domino Opens Up, Sort Of

Yesterday the Domino Sugar Factory opened up their waterfront space to the public for an Open House of sorts, but much to the dismay of those who showed up the buildings were not accessible (likely because they're unsafe, with old machinery around and floors are covered in mollases). The rendering for the future Domino homes can be seen here, and for those who still want to take a gander at the current indoor space, some photos from last year are here.

The day did provide some nice views and an update on the future conversion of the site. The NY Post reports that the 124-year-old landmarked building morphing into 2,200 housing units has gotten a lot of attention from those looking to buy. One agent told them, "I am very interested in buying property here. I love the architecture of the old Domino building." The project gets off the ground next year, and upon its completion there will be 660 units of affordable rentals or condos for those "earning between $25,000 and $95,000 a year."

Time enough to clean up the molasses from the floor and to de-toxify what was an industrial building?

    C'est magique!

It's hard to say no to 2200 apartments but it would be nice if more of the original factory buildings could have been used. I wish developers would realize that there are people who'd live in almost any kind of crazy habitat, even a water tank. No need to let all the cool stuff go to waste.

"SAVE DOMINO" really means "don't build a condo there so my ESQUIRE Building is a whole lot cooler cause it's next to this famous Dominoes building where all the hipsters know"

They go in, but they don't come out...
