Brooklyn Teens Drown in Catskills Lake

2008_10_boating.jpgAuthorities say that two teens drowned and one is still missing after their boat capsized in the Smallwood Reservoir in Sullivan County yesterday around 1:30 p.m. A fourth person, Gianfranco Generoso, 20, managed to swim to shore.

The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office told WCBS 2, "They rowed across the lake, [and] one of them stood up. We understand that it tipped over." A woman who had been walking her dog hear their calls for help and called 911. The AP reports that divers "found the bodies Domenico Coluccio, 19, and Anthony Dupont, 18," around 4:30 p.m. While the water was about 8 feet deep, Bethel Town Supervisor Dan Strum told the Daily News, "The water at this time of year - it's muddy, it's murky."

WABC 7 reports the victims, who were all related and from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, had been visiting a relative. They were not wearing life jackets and they were wearing layers of heavy clothing, which may have weighed them down in the water.

Yes, famdoc, that's his family that owns that store.

why do people insist on boating in the winter without life jackets?

What a tragedy. Wonder if Mr. Coluccio was a member of the family that owns Coluccio's, the outstanding Italian imported foods store in Bensonhurst?

Somewhere out there someone will be saved because they heard about this and decided to put on a life jacket.

Very unfortunate circumstance for the family.

  • A tragedy. Rest in Peace.
