Under the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday afternoon, five vendors of New York City street food gathered for the 4th annual Vendy Awards, the Oscars/Golden Globes/MTV Music Award/Olympics of street food. In contention for this year's award were Fauzia's Delights from The Bronx, the Biriyani Cart from Manhattan, Kwik Meal from Manhattan, Soler Dominican from Brooklyn, and Calexico Carne Asada from Manhattan. And for the first time at the Vendys, a people's choice award for best dessert vendor was up for grabs. Contenders in that group included the Treats Truck, the Dessert Truck, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, and Wafels and Dinges, which was a no-show.

In the end, Calexico Carne Asada and the Vendley Brothers (how could they not win the Vendys with that last name) walked away with the 2008 Vendy Cup and Kwik Meal was the 1st runner up. Calexico was serving up a variety of food: tacos, a quesadilla, and a tamale. The People's Choice Award (savory) went to the Biriyani Cart while the People's Choice Award (sweet) went to the Treats Truck, who served up a large, large variety of their tasty treats.

The awards, which serve as a fundraiser for the Street Vendor Project, raised over $30,000 yesterday.

as a southern california native, calexico was a lifesaver when i used to work in soho. great, great food. the only problem was that it was about 60% overpriced.

hey, did you know that the Wafles and Dinges, The Treats Truck, and Rickshaw Dumplings all have Twitter accounts?! They tell you what location they are at, special deals, etc...That's neat yes?

Soon prolly we will all have special hats thats let us think something and then it will come true.
