Scientology Protesters Greet Katie Holmes's Broadway Debut

101708scientology.jpgAs expected, Scientology protesters turned out last night to demonstrate at the red carpet opening of Arthur Miller's tragedy All My Sons, which, you'll recall, features Katie Holmes, Scientological wife of big shot Operating Thetan Level VII Tom Cruise. The Risky Business star wasn't in the audience last night (he caught an earlier preview), but other boldface attendees included Patricia Clarkson, Barbara Walters, and Isabella Rossellini. One of the protesters told WPIX, "Our main focus right now is getting Katie out of Scientology. There's been news going around the tabloids saying she would like to get out." As for her Broadway debut, Big Ben Brantley at the Times says she "delivers most of her lines with meaningful asperity, italicizing every word...and I didn’t believe for a second that she really loved the honorable, naïve Chris." Katie Holmes just needs to be saved from her self-destructive predilection for aging dwarfs. Both her and Anne Hathaway could both use a big bowl of Mother's chicken soup.

Getting Katie Holmes to renounce Scientology is a goal for Anonymous for the same reason that getting celebrities into Scientology is a goal for that organization (one of the same reasons, anyway, celebrities also pour tons of money into Scientology's bank accounts). It would generate press... as this story illustrates. Their demonstrations at her Broadway performance drew a lot more coverage than the earlier ones that didn't have a high-profile celebrity involved.

Further, getting a celebrity to leave Scientology would help encourage lesser-known people that they could do it too.

That is one of the biggest problems in American society. We are so interested in what celebrities and sport figures do every second on the day. The average American probably doesn't even know how the economy got so bad. I ask some people that question and all they say is it's because of Bush.

this losers should be protesting on wall street instead of broadway.

  • babyhitler

scientoly is insane. How can people believe that crap? they should believe in a blue eyed caucasian from the middle east who can walk on water and heal the blind. That's a whole lot more believable.

  • berniegoetz

No shit. Saying you need to "save" Katie is no different than some teenybopper saying she "loves" Brad Pitt. They're celebrities. You don't know them. They don't know you. The only people who care this much about celebrities do so out of complete and total boredom with themselves.

  • robingee

Meh, what do they care? Leave her alone.
