Pencil This In

101608blackwatch.jpgTHEATER: One of biggest hits of last fall's theater season was the National Theatre of Scotland's Black Watch, produced at St. Ann's Warehouse for an all-too-brief 23-performance run. Now "Black" is back for a two month tour at the Warehouse, and you're strongly advised to sign up STAT. Based on true stories revealed during interviews with soldiers in Scotland’s elite Black Watch regiment, the show ultimately adds up to a powerful indictment of the Iraq catastrophe, but with enthralling theatrics, not strident polemics. Read our rave review from last October's run here. – John Del Signore

8 p.m. // St. Ann's Warehouse [38 Water Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn] // $55

PARTY: NonsenseNY points to tonight's Mandala NYC parties with presentations event. "There is a structured part of the evening with several 12-minute presentations or performances; this is followed by an informal part, whereby you can engage -- or party -- with the speakers and other people in the crowd." Tonight Gaurav Mishra will be on hand to discuss consumers and anti-consumerism; relationship coach Michael Jascz, photojournalist Steven Hirsch, and hydrodynamic engineer Jonathan Colby will also be there.

6:30 p.m. // 37 W 26th St // $10

EVENT: Tonight is the last Upstairs in the Square event! Until 2009, that is. Alaa al Aswany, author of Chicago and Rachael Yamagata, singer/songwriter, will be the guests of honor. They'll each discuss their work, and you'll probably get a few tunes out of the latter.

7 p.m. // Barnes & Noble [33 East 17th St] // Free

MUSIC: Fucked Up, Vivian Girls and Inepsy will all cram into the (venue that's never the same name) Schmarket Schmotel for a night of noise. Get in the middle of it all and be sure to get there for the 2nd band, highly recommended!

8 p.m. // Schmarket Schmotel [1142 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn] // $10
