Sometimes people refrain from crossing the streets out of fear of being perceived as racist... fuck that! I must confess I get most nervous when I am confronted with groups of young people, as I see them with no real knowledge of consequences to their actions, and many think of it as a fun thing to do. No biggie. I agree with babyhitler on the "Obama effect". When he wins, there will be no one else to blame for their "though" lives. It's been proven that if you want to have a better life for yourself you can do it with hard work and dedication. Being poor is not an excuse for turning into a delinquent low-life. As for racial stereotypes, I see many shady looking (white) people when I'm walking around the LES. Different kind of shady, I suppose, but still shady.

Yes slavery ended 150 years ago but prejudice, racism, profiling has existed and still exists today, even though things have come a long way since then. They pick on the Asian college students because 1) they're easy targets, generally small in stature and placid, 2) they're different, so it's easy to disassociate the pain being caused, 3) they live in the neighborhood and see everyday these college students creating a future for themselves while they dropped out of high school, and most of all 4) because while the Asians are in college is the last time most of these dumb fucks will interact with them without having to ask if they want fries with that.

The Columbia students need to be more "Street Smart" and know how to handle this type of situation. Also self-defense is a must, it sucks that 2nd amendment rights are not prominent in NY state. Get yourself a LOUISVILLE SLUGGER and protect yourself. Most of Columbia is not in a "Slum," it's in the west of upper Manhattan (some areas are gentrifying and others already are). College students are definitely easy targets for these thugs. As a former Fordham student these types of incidents would happen weekly in the Bronx, and half the time involve fire arms as intimidation. We had the Guardian Angels in our area for a while, but they proved to be ineffective. It's difficult because as a student you are told comply with their demands during a robbery or mugging, but never told how to respond to a "hate crime" or assault. Students have to be smart and travel in larger groups or numbers late at night/ early morning.
