Surrender Jenny: "Vultures" Circling Tavern on the Green

2008_10_tav.jpgPage Six has a long profile on Tavern on the Green owner Jennifer Oz LeRoy, who inherited the place from her flamboyant father Warner LeRoy in 2001 at the age of 22. She currently pays $1.3 million a year in rent to the Parks Department, but the city will be putting the lease up for bidding when it expires in the fall. Donald Trump, Nobu owner Drew Nieporent, and Danny Meyer are rumored to be "circling the restaurant like vultures." Seeing her family lose control would be devastating for LeRoy, who calls herself "the Dorothy of Tavern," and has a major thing for The Wizard of Oz, which her grandfather produced. "I added Oz as my middle name. A lot of people call me Jenny Oz." She also shares her West Village one bedroom with three Toto-like Yorkies. So she's prepared to spend millions to renew the lease, declaring, "I refuse to sell the soul of Oz."

Wasn't Toto a cairn terrier?

Tavern on the Green is pretty crappy. About the only thing it has going for it is nostalgic history.

it's crappy but i'd rather have that than a fucking Nobu or another Danny Meyer place or god forbid...some Trump POS. I hope Jenny has bucket loads of cash at the ready and her little dogs too.

Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo!

why not another danny meyer shake shack? the man knows quality. sure it's overhyped but it's not like I go to tavern on the green everyday. Look at it this way, the more shake shacks that open the less crowded the lines will be on each one. how about a motherfucking Peter luger? why is there only one?

The only thing that will generate enough revenue for this location is a Starbuck's. Yay!! more Starbucks in NY!! We need more.....

By all accounts Jenny is a really nice person. I hope she manages to rustle up the cash because the place is especially meaningful to her and her family.

I would hate to see Trump or the Meyer-Bots running that show. A partnership with Nieporent might not be a bad idea, though.

TotG deserves to be taken to the next level; it's a magical NYC landmark and while I would never want it to fall into the wrong hands, I could see it having a future as a reinvigorated destination restaurant for NYers, not just for the tourists.

"reinvigorated destination restaurant for NYers"

Yes - well said.

What a sad little world we live in.

Tavern on the Green has so much going for it: unique location, lots of space, etc... but for YEARS the food has been mediocre at best, and the decor manages to be both shabby and tacky at the same time.

The place needs a serious overhaul. I'm not saying that someone else should take it over, but if this Jenny Oz person does manage to hold onto it, she needs to do more with the place than she is currently doing.
