Firefighters Rescue 600 Pound Man by Sawing Through Home

2008_10_trh.jpgRescuers responding to a 911 call Sunday night from Long Island shut-in David Schock, 57, were forced to cut a hole in the wall of his mobile home to remove him. Andrew Donnelly at the local fire department tells Newsday, "He definitely wasn't coming out through the door." Because Schock weighs over 600 pounds, at least 10 firefighters—wearing plastic suits because there was fecal matter in the house—were needed to hoist him onto a custom-built wooden backboard and slide him through the hole. A neighbor says Schock got around his mobile home on a wooden box affixed with wheels, adding that "he did everything on his computer but he couldn't move." It apparently took him two days to reach his phone on Sunday evening to call for help after falling. A sad story, but it still doesn't top the woman who got stuck to the toilet seat after two years on the throne.

I agree this is sad, but...???

How can anyone get that fat, and not be self-limiting on his food source?

And who supplied the funding? I can guess that, but it should be investigated.

Also, someone has to be very guilty for feeding this individual, and aiding and abetting the sorry condition he was in, including the feces spread about the home.

There has to be more to this story than what is reported.

Same as the woman on the toilet..she had assistance to stay there.

Tragic, but I only feel sorry for the rescuers and the health people who had to clean him up. Not for him, or who helped him become that way.

Actually the women was stuck to the toilet for one month and her boyfriend has won the $40,000 in the lottery.

I read somewhere that today is the first time in history that children have less life expectancy than their fathers here in the US, because their weight problems (diabetes, etc.)...nice!

God Bless America! Where you can get morbidly obese and be a burden on other people to care for you.

Serves him right for not having the foresight to get a double-wide.

Do you think the firefighters were Schocked to find such a monstrous loaf of a man?

Seriously though, what a disgusting fatbody. Fecal matter? Two days to get to the phone - in a 800 sq ft shitbox? If something needs to be "custom-built" just to get you out of your house, it's time to eat a bullet. That's probably the only thing he hasn't eaten.

fecal matter in the house? this guy needs to be humilated so that he'll finally take control of his life. he washed himself with a rag on a stick.

  • tracyedw

Here come the awful comments. Yes, it's gross, but how humiliating for the man, & how awful his eating problem was to get to that weight. Most obese people are that way because they eat to dull emotional pain. I feel sorry for him, & hope he gets the psychological help he needs.

  • Steven

The guy has to be depressed. Being locked inside 24/7 and being fat.

  • ides_of_march

Pretty bad when your home is more mobile than you.

  • tackledspoon

While unusual and somewhat entertaining, I also find this kind of reporting to be sort of mean-spirited. My life would be no better or worse for having heard this story and now this poor man is being publicly humiliated. This guy had to have made some pretty awful choices to have reached his current state, but why add insult to injury?

    What? No pictures?
