Toll Increases for Garden State Parkway, NJ Turnpike

2008_10_njtoll.jpgThe NJ Turnpike Authority will be raising tolls on the NJ Turnpike and Garden State Parkway. The Star-Ledger reports that the "first hike comes in December, and the second comes in 2012....A drive along the full length of the Turnpike, which now costs $6.45, will more than double to $13.75 by 2012. Driving the Parkway from top to bottom also will more than double in four years." While the state government raised tolls to fund road improvements and fund other projects, the NJ Motor Truck Association criticized the plan, "If you're paying $8 extra per truck and you have a fleet of 100 trucks, that's an extra $800 per day. How many small businesses can absorb that?"

Good time for an increase with the way the economy is right now.

If you have 100 trucks, it's NOT a small business... dumbass!

and it should be even more for trucks. the hidden subsidy for tractor-trailer freight is obscene and encourages a lot of wasteful transportation.

I think he meant small businesses will be the ones absorbing the costs of deliveries since the charges will be passed along to them. Thats the same thing that would have happened with congestion pricing and that crazy truck charge it contained. Like for example we would probably have had to pay $15 for a burger and fries in lower Manhattan since those costs would have been passed on to every business getting a delivery.

SHEESH NOW IM REALLY STAYING HOME, SORRY BUT THERES NOTHING IN MY POCKETS ANYMORE FOR INCREASES!!

Massive toll increases like this amounts to an increase in overhead for any business using those roads. Who do you suppose will absorb that increase?

There are other ways to get YOURSELF around here in the 5 boroughs without driving. NOT too many other ways to tote around 24 pallets weighing 1500# each of paper goods, hamburger patties, crates of clothing, electronics, new cars, construction materials, etc. Are you suggesting that everyone just load up a pallet on a pallet jack and head to the subways and trains for deliveries? Plus, once you get out of the city proper, it is not that easy to just not drive. If you live over a half mile away from a major train line, then what are you supposed to do actually? Last time I drove the NJTPK it was over 100 miles long. I guess we should just walk to the Delaware bridge and across the rest of the lower 48?

Why shouldn't businesses, and by implication, consumers, pay their share of the cost of transportation infrastructure? Taxes alone aren't cutting it.

So the state and cities lay in a transportation tax with your income tax, then we pay an excise tax for using the roads. Then the double the excise tax.

Yay, taxation! Those economic planners are really smart.

Look. This is a non issue. It has to be done. The parkway has had one toll increase and the turnpike four in the last 50 years. Not even coming close to the pace of inflation.

In 1989, parkway tolls increased to 35 cents per toll booth. A whopping DIME! (19 YEARS AGO!) So now its plain for all the metro area to see... NJ residents are whining cheap bastards. Even more exposing is the fact that NJ still has among the lowest gasoline taxes in the nation.

You turds should have bullet trains flying around for all the money you pay... in property taxes... but where does it all go?

You jump on Corzine as some kind of tax happy liberal. (Other states would give their testicles to have a former Chairman of Goldman Sachs at their governor right now). Yet its you home rule Republicans that demand your useless little hamlets hold onto their own police, fire, emergency, street sweeping, mayor, council, board of ed. At enormous local cost. Corzine has been right on every single fiscal issue facing NJ.

For Christ sake... focus on what's important. You could all lower your property taxes by $5-10K per household if you would just wake up and merge.

It's not the tolls - stupid.

I'm sure you wouldn't consider DOUBLING of the subway/taxi/bus fares a "non issue!"
