Today is Last Day For NY State Voter Registration

The voter registration in NY State is today. If you haven't registered yet, the AP explains, "Only completed voter registration forms postmarked by midnight and received no later than October 15th will be valid for the upcoming general election." Additionally, if you've moved to a new county you need to reregister from your new address (and if you've moved within the county, you don't need to reregister by you should update your address with the board of elections). Here's the state Board of Elections website, the NYC Board of Election website, and the postal service's website so you can look up post offices. Additionally, the NJ deadline is October 14 (state Division of Elections website; more info) and Connecticut's is October 28 (state Secretary of State website).

My kids, both in college in other states, have sent in absentee registrations forms to the Board of Elections in Brooklyn, but have yet to receive their ballots. Anyone have any experience with this? Will their ballots arrive in time for the election?

Famdoc,

Yes, this happened to me in the 2004 election. I was living in Canada at the time. I registered months in advance and never received my absentee ballot, so I couldn't vote. I called a few days before the election and they said that there was nothing that they could do. Call your election office today to get it sorted out.

p.s. Some students are registering in the state where they attend college. New York won't be a close race, some other states will. It is probably too late for them to register in another state, since their applications are pending and most deadlines have past, but, anyhow, here is a list of swing states: http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/whos-ahead/key-states/map.html

Famdoc, absolutely call the office today (and kudos to Vanessa for supplying the info). I was in the process of moving back to NYC in 2006 and never received my absentee ballot from NJ. By the time I called them to see what was going on, it was too late (they resent the ballot, but I didn't receive it until too late).

or call 311 and do it over the phone.

According to a clerk in the Brooklyn Board of Elections office, all requests for absentee ballots are being processed and will be sent out next week.
If you don't get your ballot by the end of next week, call Mary at X1321

Also, the link to the Obama web site is very helpful. In the case of my daughter, she will be overseas on Nov. 4, so she might benefit by using the Overseas Vote Foundation federal registration web site that the Obama site links to.

I registered on Tuesday during a special drive from noon to 9pm that had over 100 sites across the city. I thought today was the last day too, but that same type of drive is occurring from noon to 9pm tomorrow as well. I don't have the link, but it's for real.
