EVENT: Alec Baldwin will take his voice over to Lincoln Center tonight for his NY Philharmonic debut! He'll be taking on narrator duties (something he did very well in the Royal Tenenbaums) for Inside the Music. "The multimedia presentation will delve into the influences that inspired Antonín Dvořák to write his famous Symphony No. 9, From the New World — which received its world premiere by the New York Philharmonic on December 16, 1893. Tickets are still on sale.
Friday // 8 p.m. // Avery Fisher Hall [63rd St at Columbus Ave] // $26 to $72
THEATER: The restlessly inventive theatrical adventurers in Philly's Pig Iron Theatre Company have brought their latest "mental circus" to New York. Called Chekhov Lizardbrain, the non-narrative comedy is "inspired by Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters and autistic author Temple Grandin's inquiries into the evolving contortions of her own brain. Chekhov Lizardbrain captures a mind as it zigzags back and forth over troubling memories, attempting to mold them into neat Russian dramas." Check out this great feature on Pig Iron in Time Out NY; Culturebot deems the show "thoughtful, intelligent, surreal, well-acted and engaging." – John Del Signore
Friday // 7 p.m. & 10 p.m. // Ohio Theater [66 Wooster St] // $35
MUSIC: Search & Restore is back and bringing Jazz to the Knitting Factory. Tonight catch the Erik Deutsch Group and the Tim Collins “Fade” band featuring Charlie Hunter. If you've never seen Hunter on stage before, do yourself a favor and go to this show. He plays an 8-string guitar/bass hybrid, for goodness sakes.
Friday // 8 p.m. // Knitting Factory [74 Leonard St] // $13
EVENT: Brooklyn Barter & Buy will bring vendors together with "clothing, shoes, and accessories that they no longer fit or want focusing on streetwear/contemporary clothing. Vendors will have their own section for their company, but their friends and associates can also participate in the section. Vendors will price each item accordingly. Items (new or used) will be marked at or around the wholesale price. The public will be able to swap goods with the vendors or simply buy." Music will soundtrack your shopping spree as Bloody Marys fill your glass.
Saturday // 2 to 8 p.m. // Supreme Trading [213 N 8th St, Williamsburg] // Free
MUSIC: This weekend is packed with a ton of good shows. Saturday we recommend heading to Music Hall of Williamsburg for Langhorne Slim and The Heartless Bastards. Check out his latest video, filmed at the (controversial) Box.
Saturday // 8 p.m. // Music Hall of Williamsburg [66 North Sixth St, Brooklyn] // $15
FEST: Riverkeeper's 3rd Annual New York Water Fest, a bottled water free event, is taking place this Sunday with a focus on NYC's tapwater. "Water Fest is a day devoted to celebrating New York City water with paddling activities, live music, great food and more." Riverkeeper's Chief Prosecuting Attorney, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., will be on hand to speak about the city's (award winning) tap water and the growing movement to drink it and protect it.
Sunday // Noon to 5 p.m. // Battery Park City, North Cove Marina // Free
THEATER: Note to anyone with tickets to the hotly-anticipated production of Blasted at Soho Rep; remember that the performance starts at 7:30, NOT 8! Yeah, we learned that the hard way, which is why you won't be reading a Gothamist review of this controversial play, only now receiving its first major New York production after shocking London critics in 1995. Thankfully, Ben Brantley's punctual: "That Blasted still shocks isn’t because it traffics in visuals commonly associated with films like Saw and Hostel. It’s because those horrors are created by characters who are not, finally, so unlike us. [Playwright] Sarah Kane carefully and ruthlessly locates the urge to inflict pain and humiliation in the dull cloth of the everyday." The previously sold-out run of Blasted has just been extended through November 9th; those tickets will sell out immediately. – John Del Signore
Sunday // 7:30 p.m. // Soho Rep [46 Walker St] // $45
