Not Banksy--Just an "Artist Informally Affiliated W Banksy"

2008_10_rkuszyk.jpgSome thought the bearded man wearing a hoodie standing around the Banksy mural installation yesterday, but artist R. Nicholas Kuszyk (of Rrobots) sent us an email: "the photo of the hooded person is not banksy. it's me, r nicholas kuszyk, a williamsburg brooklyn based artist informally affiliated w banksy and colossal media. i was consulting the paint crew on behalf of banksy who was too busy to oversee the entire process. this might sound like shameless self promotion (the name of the game) but at least i had the foresight, well banksy and i had the foresight, to plan on wearing something that covered my face yesterday in the case of people like david noseypants photog acting all paparazzi. otherwise this ordeal would have made my face public property. a dozen people took my photograph yesterday. david was the most intrusive. well played sir." He also some links to his works, such as this one that happens to have a sexy lady walking by.

Bansky looks nerdier than that guy.

he's not banksy, he's just the dog doing the work for the master.

David was "the most intrusive"? From the other photos on the guy's website, it's clear that this pic was taken from across the fucking street! Oooh, how intrusive.

A sexy burlesque lady! she's not wearing any pants!

Ah for this man's arrogance ,the arrogance and
ambition of youth.
This art project is not as important as the growing
cost of toilet paper at CVS.

An open letter to R Nicholas Kuszyk

It sounds as though R Nicholas would like an apology - I’d be happy to comply: I’m sorry I took pictures of a man in a public area directing the production of a 4 story mural by a well known graffiti artist, while hiding his own identity. I’ll make it a priority to see that no one questions or confronts the intentions of “radical” urban artists, such as Banksy and yourself, ever again.

As Mr. Kuszyk has found it necessary not to simply inform the public about the error, but instead continue on to attack me with this statement and a scathing personal letter from Nicholas I received (see below), I would like to take a moment and explain my intentions. My name is David Steele Overholt, I am also an artist - currently attending graduate school at New York University’s ITP (Interactive Telecommunications Program). Banksy’s personal works have been a topic of discussion on multiple occasions pertaining to his use of urban spaces, intrusion, contemporary graffiti, and technology’s effects on private and public identity. The pictures taken yesterday were shown in an urban art and architecture class and sparked another of these conversations; the foundation of Banksy’s work.

I’m a fan of Banksy, his work, and the issues he brings to light. We know Banksy is the master of anonymity, and if he told Mr. Kuszyk: “You should wear thick glasses, grow a beard and wear a hood. If anyone inappropriately and pervertedly taps you on your shoulder and asks about the piece, you should walk away,” (in so many words) he should see Banksy’s blatant use of him to continue Banksy’s own un-publicity. Even still, I commend Nick on doing the same.

So, thanks for the good publicity Nick! I’m sure Banksy is proud.

Intrusively Yours,
David Noseypants Photog

:: wrong.

hey gossip guy, my name is R Nicholas Kuszyk. i’m who you thought was banksy over on houston and macdougal yesterday…

were you the guy that got up in my face and inappropriately patted me on the back congratulating me? or the chubby staring guy in the little scion thing. i’ve gotten 25 emails and texts from people today about your pervy photos. im glad i had the foresight to wear the hood and glasses. otherwise strangers would be fucking with me in the street calling me banksy… like your nosey ass thought would be ok to do.

i hope you at least work for gawker or gothamist? i dont see the point otherwise.

funny.

So a guy dressed like a douchebag while "overseeing" the production of a douchebag painting is in fact a douchebag. There's a fuckin surprise.

How about people in the street call you dickface. The economy is in the toilet and fucking idiots drawing on walls are just insignificant. Please stop making yourselves seem important. David, if you see this guy again, just punch him in the face...

^agreed. hear hear.

I don't think these "street artists" could be less important right now. What a bunch of egomaniacs.
