Billionaires Waltz Around Term Limits

2008_10_goblla.jpgBillionaire term limits proponent Ronald Lauder (pictured, far right) confirmed his support for Mayor Bloomberg's and the City Council's legislation to add another term to term limits--and expressed his hope it would be overturned after (presumably) Bloomberg was re-elected. Lauder told the NY Times that he believes term limits will go back to two after a voter referendum in 2010, "To me, this is a temporary solution."

However, Lauder also referred to the economic crisis, "I think we’re damn lucky to have a mayor here who understands this stuff and who understands the city." Lauder had met with Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion yesterday to discuss the ins and out of a temporary vs. permanent term limits change. However, many other elected officials, including ones hoping to run for mayor in 2009, have been critical of the maneuvers and City Councilman Bill deBlasio met with billionaire Tom Golisano (pictured, far left) to gauge his interest in helping keep terms to two.

As for City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, she claims she's still undecided. And when NY1 asked about the public's voice in the matter, she said, "At the end of the day, if these changes go through, they'll have to be voted on by 51 individuals that have been elected by districts in all five boroughs."

Yesterday, State Senator Hakeem Jeffries introduced a bill requiring "voter approval to change term limits in New York cities where the law exists" and today two groups filed ethics complaints against Bloomberg re: term limits. Also interesting: Opposition to extending term limits only gained strength this week, because in the months (and years) Bloomberg has been gearing up for third term talk, no one actually believed it would happen.

Bloomberg, Lauder & Co. are un-American. There should be a hearing in Washington to get to the bottom of this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Un-American

they're probably going to use the Dow as an excuse.
but we're on to them. you got your bail out, yes bail out and still it's in shambles. why? I'm guessing Greed.

I guess I'm unamerican too, because I'm all for keeping him. In fact, I would simply extend his current term for a year, and have elections then, with or without him, according to whatever gets decided about the third term.
I don't want him running a campaign when he's supposed to be taking care of this city's economy. He's smart, his strongsuit is money, and money is what's at stake right now.
My POV is as simple as that.

Why have elections at all? New York's billionaires only want to do what's right for us. We should just trust them. I say let them rule by fiat. Bloomberg for King!

Even Socialist Chavez put the vote to the people to extend his term. Bloomberg is disgusting and a parasite to use this crisis to extend his job. It will take more than one mayor to solve these issues and if he cared then he can help in the background. Bloomberg gave only 5.5 million of our money to council member simcha felder to buy his vote on congestion pricing. Simcha Felder is very unethical and I am glad he lost to Parker. However he will now stay in the council another 4 years and will continue stealing from us.

cucarachita - you are most likely not un-American. Because you are not involved in their activities. You simply have your opinion.

Bloomberg is just being a Nazi...which is kind of ironic when you really think about it.

He is basically saying..."The hell with what the people want and what the people have voted for...I have the power and the money so I will do whatever I want."

Sounds pretty Nazi to me!

Throw the billionaires to the lions.

I miss Mayor Koch.

Tell me again: how did a makeup heir get so much stroke in how our government is run?

www.forgotten-ny.com

Billionaire glamour and wisdom don't have the charge they used to have. Koch, Giuliani, Bloomberg... each represents a New York that doesn't exist anymore. Bloomberg's just the latest casualty. His magic won't work anymore because the bubble he rode on has popped popped popped...

sinisterteashop - your right about Bloomy and the bubble. Two years ago he realized a financial crisis was looming and he began working on changing the term limits. Yes. Two years ago Bloomberg started his efforts to change the term limits.

Just what we need. The biggest pro-ponent of all the crappy glass tower luxury condos in every freakin nook and cranny in NYC. This guy is a first class a$$hole.

#5: Bloomberg's term is only extended if you vote for him again.

End of the Gilded Age.
Let's move on to the next.

Could someone list the major accomplishments of the Bloomberg administration?
I would love to see them against a list of failures and incompletes.
