COMEDY: The Manhattan-based animal rescue group Waggytail is holding a benefit event tonight at Lolita. Comedian/actress Janeane Garofalo will headline (as we all learned in the 1996 film The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Garofalo is an animal lover), with Gabe and Jenny hosting. Also on the lineup: Liam McEaneaney, Bobby Tisdale, Arj Barker and more.
8 p.m. // Lolita [226 Broome St] // $10
MOVIE: The Chasing World is based on the Yusuke Yamada novel "Tag for Real,” which tells the tale of a surreal game of tag in which those who are tagged, die. Tonight you can catch the movie at Tribeca Cinemas, and beforehand they invite you to the city's largest game of tag. "Taking place in Battery Park, NYT GAME TAG promises to be a manhunt like never seen before. Five people will be dressed in black and are 'it'. The rest are possible victims. If you're the last standing, you win an iPod and eternal bragging rights."
7 p.m. film // Tribeca Cinemas [54 Varick St] // $10
THEATER: Beloved children's book author Shel Silvertstein (Where the Sidewalk Ends) also happened to be a grownup who wrote grownup stories, among other things—like music for the movie Postcards from the Edge. In 2001, two years after his death, the Atlantic Theater Company produced An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein, comprised of ten vignettes "featuring a cast of unlikely and neurotic characters, from a husband obsessing that his wife is a bag lady, from two ladies of the night offering a bargain, to a courtroom scene where we learn the meaning of 'meat and potatoes.'"
