East River Esplanade Way Behind Schedule, In Trouble With the State

100808eastriveresplanade.jpgThe $150 million reconstruction project on the two mile esplanade between East River park and Battery Park was supposed to be done last year, but you know the drill. Two thirds of the promenade still have a long way to go, and last year the state Department of Environmental Conservation fined the city and contractor Pile Foundation Construction Company $200,000 because workers were allowing the shoreline to erode into the water. Now a DEC spokesman says the company hasn't fixed the problem and the agency wants to revoke the work permit. When asked by the Villager when the project is now expected to be completed, the foreman laughed and said he didn’t know: "New York City isn’t exactly the fastest people in the world."

"workers were allowing the shoreline to erode into the water"

Anyone who took geology 101 knows that water naturally erodes shorelines. What exactly do they mean? Another enviro-shakedown? Is shutting down the project going to be any better for the environment?

Can't we get Trump to take charge of all these projects? Especially that hole in the ground the MTA has on Broadway and Fulton - I don't care if he puts his name on it - just get it done - money has been allocated and run through as if it was air through ones fingers without any accountability - and Bloomy wants to change the rules to run for a third term - yea NYC - the city where nothing gets done unless it's by Disney.

Haha...like we didn't see this coming.

There is some confusion here between the waterfront esplanade within East River Park, and the East River Waterfront redevelopment which includes the East River Esplanade between East River Park and Battery Park. You Follow?

The Villager article is about East River Park and its delays, ie: bad contractor and sinking into the river.

The Esplanade between East River Park and Battery Park is being developed by the NYC Economic Development Corporation, which is still in its planning process. the First bit of that to be built will be the southern half.

East River Park is the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation.

Two completely different projects in two seperate parks. Still follow?

Gotta love the different city agencies.
