is it possible that the commuters themselves are the ones getting slower?

With the ad revenues, taxpayer money, and fares there is PLENTY of money in the pipeline.

The problem is that of the various 'outgoing' cash pipelines, the one marked "DEBT SERVICE" is pretty sizable.

Potosi: yes, there isn't friction from the tracks on a maglev, but there is wind resistance. It's definitely more efficient than what's in place, though.

I've been riding the subway 5 days a week since 1997, and lately I'd say it's about as good as it was in 1997. Nowhere near as good as around 2003-2005.

I went through a presentation on the ad prices for the subways and buses...WOW.

With the ad revenues, taxpayer money, and fares there is PLENTY of money in the pipeline.

If we would simply replace the rails and subway cars with a Mag-lev system we could save tons of money in powering the engines. All you need is a little push and the mag-lev will keep moving infinitely until you brake on frictionless tracks.

The system needs to be completely overhauled.

Unfortunately nobody has the bajillion dollars needed to do so.

there was a sick person at 7th Avenue stop.

Incompetence!!! Everyone at the MTA should be fired because this passenger was sick!

I'm paying less than $2 per ride, I deserve to have this ride with NO SICK PASSENGERS! I bet there are no sick passengers in Philly or Washington!

6.5 million riders per day, and the bumbling MTA leadership can't even keep sick passengers off their trains. IDIOTS! I bet they don't even have math degrees either!

Now I just need an article that justifies reading Gothamist during work.

the scum of the earth rides the subway system. Why would anyone want to improve this decrepit system when the fucking animals, piss, shit, and deface everything while acting with a sense of entitlement? These riders will pay $200 for the latest pair of Air Jordans, $300 for a fucking Iphone, $3 for a cup of coffee, but bitch and moan when they may have to pay 25¢ more a ride? Fuck them all. Walk to work if you don't like it...

I was delayed this morning because of all the crap.

I love how the announcers always say, "Thank you for your cooperation"

...like we have a choice?

Bah!

If people don't like waiting in line for buses and subways let me suggest private cars as an alternative. It might cost more, but at least one doesn't have to deal with all those horrid people.

You know the scene in the begining of the seminal movie metropolis by fritz lang? the one with the workers filing underground with a slow march towards the death of humanity? I feel that way every morning on the subway.

Waiting always sucks. It sucks the most in CVS and the Post Office, or waiting in line at the bus stop when some douche bag has a million questions for the bus driver (all of which he/she an ask after they board and allow all the other poor schlubs (us) onto the bus, helping to not send the bus off of its already 20 minute delayed route.

Bring a book or a game for yourself. Bitching about to other people on the train (talking under you breath just enough so everyone can hear it—and not care about your frustrations), doesn't help move the train and just gets people nervous and more annoyed...

As the global market plummets, sadly, the already horrific customer service will get worse, suicides will rise with violent and non violent crime. Drunken bar fights and street drug-use will all come back and before we know it, Nancy Reagan will be preaching about some bullshit "war or drugs"... Thankfully, this time around, there's the iPod to drown out all the "i'm late", "the mta sucks", wimpering and I/we just get back to my/our book(s).

In 10 years we'll look back on this global collapse from our duct taped sheds in Central Park and laugh.

Brakeman? We don't live in the 19th century anymore. There are no brakemen in the subway system.

The person jumping in front of the 7 this morning didn't help any either. But it didn't affect A/D service...that was messed up due to signal problems.

The only answer is to raise the fare because the execs at MTA need better company perks.
