  • Rangers 2 Tampa Bay 1: Last season it was the power play, or lack of one, that did the Rangers in. In the first game of the 2008-09 season, it looked like that storyline would continue, despite the multitude of new faces for New York. With just over seven minutes left in a 1-1 game the Rangers were 0-for-6 on the power play. But, Gary Roberts gave them another shot when he was whistled for a high stick and Brandon Dubinsky made it count with a wrist shot to give New York a 2-1 lead. Henrik Lundqvist made it stand up and New York got the season off on the right foot.
  • Toronto 3 Red Bulls 1: Lots of fouls and cards in this one, but a similar result for the Red Bulls, they lost. Toronto scored in the 65th and 86th minute to turn a 1-1 match into a 3-1 final.
