Suspicious Package = Hours of Delays at Lincoln Tunnel

2008_10_linctun.jpgThe race to get out of NYC through the Lincoln Tunnel was painful yesterday afternoon into evening as authorities investigated a suspicious package on I-495 West. MyFoxNY reports that the section right have the Weehawken exit was shut down between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. And after it was cleared up, there was another hour or two of residual delays!

The suspicious package was a bottle. It turn out to be harmless, but the AP reports there was another incident on Wednesday when "tunnel traffic was diverted to local roads for several hours due to two bottles filled with an unidentified liquid that were found not to be hazardous."

Besides car traffic being diverted on local NJ streets, all those commuter buses headed from Port Authority through the tunnel were also held. Think about it--being stuck on a Shortline bus for hours. To those people leaving bottles near the tunnel: The traffic karma gods will exact payback.

blabla.... I'm not one for conspiracy theories but... I was leaving the city today on a bus and saw two of those copters you mentioned hovering near manhattan....

  • What a complete waste of time. I was stuck in that standstill for 2 hours (reports that the traffic wait 1 hour were not exaggerated; they were just inaccurate). We got into the tunnel after 4pm and didn't get out until after 6:25. I heard from my aunt who was headed in the same direction that they closed the tunnel behind us (she ended up taking the Holland Tunnel to get into NJ). All that for a fucking bottle?

    Seriously.

And on a Friday evening, no less. I'm shomer fucking Shabbos!

Wasn't Clay Aitken the one with the "suspicious package"?

  • blablanyc

I don't know if many of you have noticed there have been daily exercises by the Fire Dept. in Manhattan. There have also been the black Homeland Security helicopters spotted circling the island. Something is up. Planned terrorist attack soon?

  • Bottomless Chips

    The terrorists have won.

  • The "if you see something, say something" campaign has made some people paranoid.

Hmmm, two bottles with an unidentified liquid.

What else is liquid going to be held in but a bottle? It's just litter.

  • HUGO_MEGO

Why is the PA wasting time with this sort of thing? Michael Moore and the neo-libs have told us many times that there is no terror threat. This is another stunt by George Bush to boost his ratings in his final days.

  • Spirit of 76

Hey, give the PA a break. They have to spend all their manpower enforcing their ban on photography around their bridges and tunnels.

  • JacqueMehoff

a news report said it was a snapple bottle.

3 billion a week in Iraq.

And it comes down to 2 random bottle of Old Forty to bring the city to a standstill.

    Woo Bush!

  • Steven

3 hours needed to investigate a bottle!? Then the Port Authority decides to close everything down during rush hour on a Friday no less.

The Port Authority is useless just like the MTA.

  • jterry121

The Port Authority should all be fired & made to fight in Iraq. Useless scumbags
