The U.S.S. Intrepid made it back up the Hudson to Pier 86 on the West Side today. The aircraft carrier underwent a $120 million refurbishing over the past two years and is headed back to serve as the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum.
A little history from its press materials: "One of the most distinguished war ships in naval history, the USS Intrepid was first launched in 1943 during World War II, then aided in NASA spacecraft recovery and later served in Vietnam. In 1976, the USS Intrepid was decommissioned and established as a museum ship by Zachary Fisher and the Intrepid Museum Foundation. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum officially opened in New York City in 1982." The museum will be back open on November 8.

We were surprised by it while eating on the patio behind the Red Hook Fairway. It was AMAZING to see, especially as it passed by the Statue of Liberty.
I wonder though, does my 3 year old son think this kind of thing happens at the grocery store all the time?

I find death machines depressing. It might be interesting to watch a couple of them destroy one another, though.
I believe the Intrepid goes back to WWII and also space craft recovery in the sixties as well as Vietnam.

Carriers are awesome because they take five whole red pegs to sink.
and when you're there go take the tour of the Growler. that sub is tiny compared to the carrier.
if you're claustrophobic and don't like hopping over hatches, try at your own risk.
they make you go through a mock hatch to make sure you can fit.
I was lucky enough to once get tour through an Ohio class missile sub. Freakin' awesome.
