Gilbert & George Retro at Brooklyn Museum Begins

Internationally acclaimed British artists Gilbert & George are getting their first American retrospective in more than two decades with an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum that opens tomorrow. On view are more than ninety pictures produced since 1970, including more than a dozen that will be seen only in the Brooklyn. The exhibit will be on view through January 11th and is the final stop an acclaimed international tour organized by the Tate Modern.

Since meeting at a London arts school in the '60s, the eccentric duo—who prefer to be called "an artist" instead of two individuals—have collaborated on works in a variety of media, including performance art, famously painting themselves gold for "The Singing Sculpture" in 1970. Their large scale photo-montages (some seen here) began in black and white and, in the '80s, expanded into bold, vivid colors, exploring themes of terrorism, superstition, AIDS-related loss, aging, and death. "The artist" was on hand at a media preview this morning to answer questions; no word yet on whether George finally revealed why Gilbert's name comes first.

Well, well. Isn't that so precious.

Their art is amazing.
I used to live around the corner from them in Shoreditch, and they were the nicest pair of eccentrics you could hope to meet.
Precious..maybe, but interesting and unique ? Absolutely.

That photograph of them is great. It's nice to see a renewed interest in their work lately.

Unlike Banksy, these are the british artists that New Yorkers can embrace.

Careful, that stuff attracts blue meanies.
