Last Night's Action: Torch Extinguished

2008_09_libertylogo.jpg

  • Shock 75, Liberty 73: Not to be outdone by the Mets and the Yankees, the Liberty saw its season end one day after baseball's regular season. A furious rally couldn't make up for a disastrous first half, when the Liberty was outscored, 41-24. Janel McCarville led the way with 21 points, and Shameka Christon had 12. But Detroit shot 51 percent from the floor. Tough to win when opponents do that.

Those trying to watch this game on ESPN2 had to watch on ESPN Classic until the White Sox-Tigers makeup game got finished. What a blow for the WNBA to have its game on ESPN Classic instead of ESPN2. The Liberty was denied a chance to face Becky Hammon's San Antonio Silver Stars in the WNBA finals.

The only good thing about the Liberty is that their logo is actually a little better then the Knicks logo. After that, I didn't realize the WNBA was still in season. The only way the WNBA will get notice is by having retired NBA players be head coaches. I'm not saying WNBA women coaches are not up to par, but the average sports lover can't even name two WNBA women coaches. Bill Laimbeer brings his many years of NBA experience and championships to the league and a team. So, in other words I guess I'm saying the WNBA needs more male influence in order to be recognized. Also, it doesn't help that their season runs along with baseball, that is why they got bumped for a baseball game, an important one at that.

Nitpick: The one-game playoff being played by the Twins and White Sox tonight is still part of the regular season.
