Last Night's Action: A Depressing End

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Florida 4 Mets 2: Where do you go from here? While 2008 is not as bad as 2007, the fact is the Mets blew a 3-1/2 game lead with 17 to play. For all the talk about the bullpen, or lack thereof, they managed only five runs during the final weekend series with the Marlins.

Some changes have to be made, but it seems stupid not to officially hire the manager who led them to a 55-38 record down the stretch. Jerry Manuel did a solid job this season. Maybe the Mets will change their mind on Omar’s deal since his original deal lasts through 2009? One thing’s for sure, the fans who stayed for the closing ceremonies after the game deserve a medal.

  • Yankees Red Sox Spilt a Doubleheader: Was this it for Mike Mussina? If so, he went out with his highest ever win total for a season, clinching his 20th in the first game Sunday when the Yankees won 6-2. Mussina has 270 wins for his career and turns 40 this offseason. In the second game, New York extended their season just a little longer, but fell to Boston 4-3 in ten innings.
  • Jets 56 Arizona 35: New York scored 34 points in the third quarter and seemed well on their way to an easy win. But, Arizona made things interesting with 21 points in the third quarter, cutting it to a 13-point game. And that was just the challenge Brett Farve needed as he threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, six for the game, as he led New York to victory.
  • Detroit 64 Liberty 55: It’s all tied up in the conference finals. The Shock outscored the Liberty 25-9 in the fourth quarter to win the game.

"Jerry Manuel did a crap job. He missed the playoffs."

Was Jerry on the mound serving up a homer to Wes freaking Helms? Did he come into the game with the bases loaded and walk in a run? Did he fly out with runners on base?

C'mon everybody, don the red, white, and blue and become a Cubs fan bandwagoner. Get your heart broken twice in one season.

    Also, to commenter #2 blablanyc:

The Mets wouldn't have been in position to even be close to the playoffs without Manuel's managing. Yes they need pitching help, but Manuel polished that turd to as high a shine as was possible, given the talent he had on hand. I don't think you can blame Manuel for this, but rather, injuries and a lack of depth.

And The Buffalo Bills, the only NY football team that actually plays in NY, are now 4-0.

  • whitecastlerock

The relief pitching was atrocious all year-Minaya did little to address that. Any clutch hitting was undermined by mediocre relievers who couldn't find the strike zone. Yet another long offseason to wallow in misery...

psst.. i know you nor'easters aren't used to the spelling yet, but it's Favre.

  • blablanyc

Jerry Manuel did a crap job. He missed the playoffs. Repeat fail. I believe Minaya will replace Manuel with a Latin manager and not fully address the pitching problems. There's no way the Met babies are ever going to the World Series.
