Hackers May Hate Mario Batali

2008_09_babbo.jpgAs you can see from the screenshot on the right, someone has been screwing with random bits of code that comprise the website for Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich’s immensely popular restaurant, Babbo. The end result is empty calories in the form of malicious code that could steal your credit card info or even harness your CPU power in service of cyberevil.

A detour through Google’s current Safe Browsing explanation page for the Babbo site lists two offending websites that may be delivering the bad code using the restaurant’s web presence. One domain is hosted in Taiwan. There’s been no official comment from the Bastianich/Batali camp, but here's how it probably went down between the unidentified hacker and the gluten-powered supercomputer:

BabboNYC: Shall we play a game?

Hacker: Yeah. Love to. How about Global Thermonuclear War?

BabboNYC: Wouldn't you prefer a nice plate of Beef Cheek Ravioli?

Hacker: Later. Right now let’s play Global Thermonuclear War.

BabboNYC: What about some Two-Minute Calamari, Sicilian Lifeguard Style?

Hacker: Global Thermonuclear War.

BabboNYC: Fine.

[malware launches]

In retaliation, expect Batali to wage war on computer hackers using an arsenal of offal including tripe, trotters, and pig’s feet. Meanwhile, the second episode of the chef’s PBS show, with Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Bittman, and that Spanish actress, re-airs tonight at 10 on WLIW. And remember…The only way to win is not to play the game.

Batali has been pretty vocal in his criticism of food bloggers, but I can't imagine this is related to it.

Hate Mario? No way! His partners, the Bastianich family? That's quite another story. How Mario can even stand for a minute having his name associated with them is beyond reason.

Maybe they hate how he gets to cavort around Spain with Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Bittman and that Spanish actress.
