Chinese Food Delivery Man Shot in Head; Police Search for Suspects

2008_09_cfdm.jpgA Chinese food delivery man who was shot in the head while delivering an order in the Bronx is expected to survive, but lawmakers are demanding justice. City Councilman Larry Seabrook said, "Someone knows [the shooting suspects], and they need to give them up," while City Councilman John Liu said, "Not again. Not another vicious attack against a hard-working individual supporting his family while on the job serving the community."

The Daily News reported that Fangwang Chen, 31, was bringing a $22 order to a home on E.229th Street in Williamsbridge, "when he was cornered about 7:20 p.m." A source said, "Apparently they fought him for the food. Somebody placed a food order to the address, but nobody there said they ordered it. We believe it was two persons who waylayed him." The suspects tried grab the food and shot Chen in the head. Chen managed to call the restaurant owner at New China Garden, "He said, 'I can't breathe. I'm uncomfortable. I need the police.'"

Chen's wife, who is at Jacobi Medical Center as her husband remains in critical condition, said, "He works hard for us. I can't believe something like this could happen, and to happen on his last day of work before moving on"--Saturday was supposed to be his last night at New China Garden before working at a new restaurant. Chen has been a NYC resident for 10 years, and he and his wife have two children.

The Chinese Restaurant Association said, "The senseless violence targeting Chinese food delivery people has got to stop now," and is offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the attackers (the police are also offering $2,000). Fujian American Association said, "The attackers didn't even take Mr. Chen's money, which makes this an even more outrageous and senseless act." In 2005, a Chinese food delivery man bringing a $9 order to a Bronx apartment building was shot in the eye; the 52-year-old died from his injuries.

oh, and y'know what will make the world a better place?

    how about someone saying

'i'm the same race of the criminals and i want these f-ing criminals go to hell. they deserve every racist accusation on the face of the earth. but just remember that they're not one of us, and that there're many of us who are good and will not associate with them, even race. and we do not deserve to be called names. but the f-ing criminals? oh yeah, go head. give them hell.'

wait, chris rock did that, didn't he?

  • savior78

now, we know that the morality of this country has pooped diarrhea when Al Sharpton tries in vain to protect the criminals b/c people called them ______ .

i'm done here. i don't think anyone wants to learn something new, something that is right. now, what am i supposed to do in my office again?

  • savior78

"And with comments like that you wonder why the world hasn't changed to be a better place. "

this world hasn't changed to be a better place b/c of the evil ones who shoot at random people outside their race. and this world WILL BE a better place starting with people not shooting a person outside their race, b/c no one will hurl insults at the criminals and no one will find patterns within a particular race.

but if some people choose to commit crimes outside their race, the criminals need the courage to withstand racist accusations, and they need to know also that people outside that race may get really really mad. now, this may not be common sense with everyone, i understand. the truth is, criminal acts are far worse than racist accusations at the accused.

of course, it's not right to assume that EVERYONE within that race deserves racist accusations. it's also not right to try to tell people not to hurl insults at the criminals--the criminals deserve every single insult by the civilians who deemed that their acts were evil.

but like i say, the criminals will be cut into tiny pieces and be fed to pigs, which will happen in Hell. i hear that christians believe in hell, and i say to yourself, 'what a good concept!'

"EVERYONE in the ghetto is not trash..."

the author didn't even say that 'EVERYONE in the ghetto is trash.' his exact phrase is:

"This act is disgusting being perpetrated by the ghetto trash"

now, he seems to be clearly calling the criminals ghetto trash, isn't he?

but y'know, i'd say, the criminals who committed this act will cease to exist in the near future, and they will die accidentally by the will of karma or the perpetrators will end up shooting each other b/c of trust issues.

EVERYONE knows it's ok to wish criminals death and that saying that these criminals are _______ (racist terms) is just wrong.

i mean, why don't you just go ahead and shoot the criminals like they tried to do to this poor guy? why do you gotta call them with racist terms? ohhhhhhhh noooooooooo, racist term. evil.

killing... equally evil... but you can allow that, right? but you can't allow people from using racist terms. over their dead bodies.

just what kind of message are you sending to people?

  • RoDogg

"I bet the order was Fried Chicken with Pork fried rice. Typical order by black. --"

And with comments like that you wonder why the world hasn't changed to be a better place. Why responded to a tragic story with an ignorant comment. What does that help? Who does that help?

I'm still a little surprised that Jen Chung and Gothamist allow comments like this to be posted. Jen, to see you post on a thread where racist comments are posted is a disappointment.

Shinobi Shaw: Everyone in the ghetto is not trash so the term "ghetto trash" is offensive.

  • MrCow

that's horrible. i'm glad he's going to survive.

  • NannyState

This reeks of a gang initiation. Commit a random violent act to prove how thug you are. Since the NYPD loves to kill anyway, just let the dogs loose on the gangs. No bag limit.

  • Spirit of 76

[25] Generally, people who have their cell phone stolen quickly have the service shut off so anyone planning to do a robbery like this had better get it done almost immediately. As for payphones, they're getting harder to find these days thanks to the proliferation of the aforementioned cell phones. I give it another 5-10 years before they're extinct.

[26] Because if you have a gun, you're invincible? I suppose you have eyes on the back of your head. Everybody in the world could have a gun and you can still get shot in the back. In fact, it'd be more likely then. Look at all the stories about shootouts between rival gangs with bystanders caught in the crossfire. They have more guns than the general populace, but I don't see that keeping them from violence. Frankly, with the stupidity that's on display everywhere and every day of the year, I'm glad more people don't have guns.

  • nik13

We don't know yet who the perps were, but next season's "Law & Order" will re-tell this story with Irish or Italian kids as thieving gunmen.

  • Shinobi Shaw

I am Latino and have (if not the majority) many Asian friends who I dined and socialize all the time.

This act is disgusting being perpetrated by the ghetto trash who probably ruined or lowers thew standard of living even further for the hardworking individuals who live there.

This is why I believe in the 2nd amendment.

  • Jen Chung

@Spiritof76--I get your point, but what if it's a stolen cell phone number...or a payphone nearby?

  • GigiDmnd

So what happened to the Chinese food?

Kidding aside - My prayers are with Fangwang Chen and his family.

"i guess somebody wanted to buy a new pair of Air Jordans. Don't you just love black people?"

if they took the money, sure. whoever did it didn't even bother robbing the victim.

  • Papercutninja

i guess somebody wanted to buy a new pair of Air Jordans. Don't you just love black people?

  • Spirit of 76

Why don't restaurants do callbacks to verify orders in these neighborhoods? Or use caller ID? If you call the number back and they say they never ordered it, it's a red flag. If the fake order is placed from a cell phone number, then the owner of the phone will be fairly easy to track down.

  • sharpshoota

of course it's the same folks that perpetrate all of the stupid , senseless crimes in NYC. No one in their community will say who did it because they don't want to be snitches.

  • RoDogg

    @ Zodak

He is alive and expected to survive, wasn't killed.

  • zodak

look at that fairy tale wedding photo. it's sad that some savages killed this dude for nothing.

  • RoDogg

And this is why some restaurants are going to stop delivering to "certain" areas. Senseless acts of ignorance by underdeveloped people!

  • Snoopy

Hope the guy recovers fully. It's a shame when a person is just going about trying to make a living and shit like this happens to him.

As a side note. One of the most preferred foods for a condemned prisoner's last meal is fried chicken. Hopefully these guys will eat their last soon.

  • fakenewyorker

it was probably a bunch of teenagers who wanted easy cash and had a gun.

    why a chinese delivery guy?

    -language barrier

    -they carry money to you

-maybe they're undocumented so they don't want to deal with the cops

but let's get real, asians get little respect in the hood.

    "Territorial mob hit"

they used to call that "lynching"...

oh wait, the victim isn't black, so this is not LYNCHING.

  • Felix Hoenikker

Territorial mob hit perhaps? Why did they leave the money if it was a holdup, unless he resisted, got shot in the scuffle, and the perp panicked and ran?

  • Al Sharpton hates Black People.

  • JacqueMehoff

only if the main stream media follows it, which it won't. same with livery cab drivers who are shot.

  • jchez

I think Gothamist has to follow this story with 100 more postings, including the trial, just to match the number of postings that they put up on the Cat Killer.

  • JacqueMehoff

I think the public officials expressed their outrage well enough for all of us.

  • Bottomless Chips

    Where's Al Sharpton?

  • mryoon

you've got to be kidding me...

  • S.D.

Regardless of who did this, I hope he makes it.

  • eyekantspel

no surprise that there's less gothamist rage against a chinese deliveryman being shot in the head than in some jerk kicking a cat. maybe somewone will post about how shooting deliverymen is a sign someone could be a homicidal maniac.

  • eyekantspel

i don't care what the race of the people who did this are. catch them, lock them up and throw away the key. crazy how much crime there is against delivery guys and cab drivers; low paying shit jobs by people trying to make an honest living.

I wonder if the statistics support the perception that, more often than not, these crimes take place more often than not in communities that complain about the lack of service.

  • savior78

--taken from an article where the outraged commenters were put down by others calling them racists--

if a black deliveryman got shot in a neighborhood that is predominantly white, is it easy to assume that he got shot by a group of white kids? do you also assume that those fictional white kids may be racists? and do you assume that the black deliveryman may be a victim of hate crime? i am utterly surprised that among those who are responding to the supposed racists of this idiotic comment column, none of you are expressing any concern for the victim of this crime which the article originally represents. when you--the reader--think of a Chinese immigrant, do you have any stereotypes of that person? is being too nice one of them? is being humiliated and not saying anything b/c he can't speak english another one? it's always the seemingly weak who gets taken advantage of, and never the oppressor. times have changed, and this is new york. black and white racism may be in the minds of everyone nowadays, but a new racism is brewing in the air. you can tell b/c people only hold on to outdated beliefs even when things change, like this one. may be you have male asian american friends who speak perfect english but get treated like **** by none other than a lot of blacks and hispanics in new york. i hear these stories from a few of my NYU friends all the time--such as at one time my friend steve(yeah, it's a fake name but he's a real person) who's asian with a white girlfriend who constantly gets humiliated by blacks and hispanics even in greenwich village. i just hope that this isn't a cultural thing with them, that this is just a few idiots who happen to be black or hispanic. and much condolences to the victim who was led to the place like a blind animal led to the slaughter. shooting a person is a crime. shooting a person is wrong. i know the times are tough, but are we still humans? this restaurant is located in Wakefield, where 75% of the residents are black, and 20% are hispanic, which leaves only 5 out of 100 people who are not black or hispanic.

  • charshiu

How come we don't hear about deli/pizza guys getting held up?

  • Billiamsburg

We should try a scorched earth policy with the bronx.
