Waterfalls Celebrated for Being Green?

082808falls6.jpgYesterday Mayor Bloomberg made a curious move by presenting an environmental award to the man behind the Waterfalls project, Olafur Eliasson, and the Public Art Fund, the organization that commissioned the four waterfalls that have run throughout the summer along the city's East River waterfronts. The Doris C. Freedman Award has been given annually for over 25 years to people and groups who enrich the city's environment. However, just last month, the city decided to cut down the amount of hours the falls run in half due to concerns that the spray coming from them was causing damage to nearby plant life. Bloomberg's praise of the waterfalls did not seem to relate heavily to any environmental good they have done the city, instead focusing on the economic boost they have provided as a tourist attraction and adding, "This project proclaims that New York City is home to bold visions and visionaries."

the base of the waterfall is painted green. whats wrong with that?

this project proclaims the citys wasteful spending. Get over yourself bloomie. And please let someone else have a chance step down.

How many tourists came to NYC just to see the waterfalls and how does that compare to the number of tourists who would have come regardless?

These waterfalls cost NY'ers 14 million dollars to produce and run. Very green indeed!!!

I'm waiting for the smug cloud to leave NYC.

Um... Actually it didn't cost NY'ers anything, as all of it came from private funding. Maybe a bit of dignity, but I personally think they're neat, so long as they don't cost us anything :D

It "ALL" came from Private Funding???? Yeah right!

Would you like to buy the bridge that one of these wastes of money is running under???

14 millions dollars and for what??? damage to the plant life and no one i know was interested in visiting this piece of shit. Bloomberg, get lost and don't touch term limits. We voted for it and respect our votes.

I am planning an expedition to go over the falls in a barrel. I need funding. Please let me know if you are interested in funding this.
