12th Man Makes Light of 9/11

A fan on the popular Seattle Seahawks message board "Seahawks Huddle" has created a stir in his attempts to goad NY Giants fans before the two teams' matchup next week by posting a collection of 9/11 jokes. The post has naturally been taken down, but not before it raised the ire of many, including today's Daily News where they call the author "a lunatic" and share a link to his email address. The jokes were posted above an image of a smoking NYC skyline following the fall of the towers and included one-liners such as "Q: What's Al Qaida's (sic) favorite football team? A: The New York Jets" and "Q: How many New Yorkers does it take to change a light bulb? A: Nobody knows since they keep jumping out the window when it gets too hot!"

I guess I'm even more saddened that you guys can't tell the difference from an authentic person making a heartfelt comment and one idiot who clearly does not represent our region.

I guess the teenager and his brother who started these jokes could write a play and comedy based on 9-11-01.

The kid is from a Seattle burb it seems.

Thanks for the personal attack and congratulations for not getting it. I never said they were funny, I said the jokes are being made whether you think they are knee slappers or not. And they should be allowed to, whether people think they are funny or not. Nothing should be off limits. Funny is subjective anyway.

I'm deeply saddened by how much play this story has gotten in the national media. It was a really distasteful comment made by a seriously bad apple. Every city has bad apples, let's not propagate the myth that all hawk fans are ignorant bafoons like this character.

I'm from Seattle and I'm a huge hawks fan. I am also an American and like most everyone from Seattle and the entire country was deeply hurt by what happened on 9/11. Please don't give this one character the controversy he clearly wants. He is not worth your or my time.

For what its worth, I really don't like the Giants or any team from NY for that matter because I have the classic Seattle chip on my shoulder about the attention those guys get :). However, I do think they are going to stomp Seattle -- but I will be pulling for my Hawks anyway. I just hope this story doesn't get any airtime during the game.

The jokes suck, but I don't agree that 9/11, or any tragedy is indefinitely off limits. People have made jokes about the Challenger disaster. There have been comedies made about Hitler and the Holocaust. Nothing should be off limits. Maybe the hushed solemn reverence with which people demand that 9/11 always be mentioned has contributed to people using it as a political pawn to allow horrible things (like wars) to occur.

I think a lot of 9/11 survivors and victims don't want to face up to the fact that for most people, 9/11 didn't affect their lives that directly or personally and life went on as normal for them fairly quickly.
