Pencil This In
DEBATE: It's all about the debate tonight. Here's a list of all the spots airing it, but our pick is at Galapagos. Hack the Debate is "the very first integration of real-time Twitter messages over major portions of the live TV broadcast of McCain vs. Obama. For visual enhancement, video_dumbo will transform the Broadcast into 3D!" McCain in 3-D...shudder.
Friday // 8:30 p.m. // Galapagos [16 Main St, DUMBO] // Free
EVENT: DUMBO's Art Under the Bridge Festival kicks off their 12th year today. Expect open studio tours, monsters, a bunch of music and more.

Friday // 9 p.m. // the Bell House [149 7th St, Brooklyn] // $10
THEATER: The Brainum Bros. & Sons Theatrical Outfit is up in the big city from North Carolina with their "chilling horror ride" called The Two Sisters; or Douglas Mery, Next to Nothing. Presented at the Ontological Theater, home to avant-garde theater maker Richard Foreman, the show concerns "two clairvoyant sisters who have journeyed into the wilderness in search of their long lost mother; instead they find a man without a future, perform brain surgery, and reveal the contents of their underwear drawer. All in the same time it takes to bake a chicken!" Reviewer RL Nesvet calls it "entertaining and eye-catching, with a fantastic central performance." – John Del Signore
Friday // 8 p.m. // Ontological Theater at St. Marks Church [131 E 10th St] // $17
ART: This Saturday is Museum Day, which means free admission at a slew of New York museums. Just download the card on the site, grab an umbrella, and put on some good walking shoes.
Saturday // All Day // Various Locations // Free
FESTIVAL: The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Chile Pepper Fiesta will be going on rain or shine this Saturday. It'sll be just like attending a "big Brooklyn block party, where you can master Indian chutney making, watch eye-opening flame-eating and fire-juggling demonstrations, pick up culinary tips from the Sauce Boss, or join other endorphin-inspired workshops, kids' activities, and exhibits for the whole family. You can also pick up organically grown plants and chile-inspired gifts and tingle your taste buds with spicy food and cold beer." All that, and Pete Seeger & Co. will be performing.
Saturday // Noon to 6 p.m. // Brooklyn Botanic Garden [1000 Washington Ave, Brooklyn] // $8
MUSIC: Silent Barn is sweaty, dirty and over-crowded. That said, Marnie Stern (pictured) will still get us to go there. The guitarista is playing there this weekend with These Are Powers, Neptune and Screaming Females. Recommended! Also recommended that you don't sit on any of the couches, who knows what's living in those things.
Saturday // 7 p.m. // Silent Barn [915 Wyckoff Ave] // $7
THEATER: Oak Ridge, Tennessee; the early '40s. Called The Atomic City, the town was established as a base for the Manhattan Project and soon swelled with over 70,000 workers, scientists and their families. The "culture of secrecy" that permeated the place is the basis for an ambitious, interdisciplinary show that ends today. Called Atomic City, the production uses live music, dance, acrobatics (and even dialogue!) to tell the story of two neighboring families whose fathers work as physicists. Spectators sit on opposite sides of a square of fake green grass in LaMaMa's capacious theater, and Culturebot calls the show "visually stunning." John Beer at the Village Voice has a mixed review, but agrees it's damn good looking. – John Del Signore
Sunday // 2:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m. // La MaMa [74A East 4th Street] // $25
REMINDER: BAM Takeover is this Saturday!
