Last Night's Action: A Great Finish

  • Mets 7 Cubs 6: The Mets are anything but boring. One night after perhaps their worst loss of the season they rebounded with perhaps their best win. Jerry Manuel pushed his luck with Pedro Martinez and paid the price with Martinez allowing the first two runners to reach in the seventh and then Ricardo Rincon came in and gave up a three-run homer. That put Chicago ahead 6-3 and you could sense the despair setting in.

But, the Mets were not done. They scored a single run in the seventh and then two in the eighth with a two-out rally to tie the game. Jose Reyes led off the ninth with a single, but Daniel Murphy struck out trying to bunt him to second and David Wright struck out. Reyes stole second on the play and the Cubs chose to intentionally walk Carlos Delgado. That brought Beltran to the plate and after taking two pitches, he lashed the game-winning hit off the first baseman's glove.

And so it comes down to this, three games left and the Mets are a game behind the Phillies for the division and tied for the wild card with the Brewers who won in extra innings Thursday.

  • Toronto 8 Yankees 2: Here’s something that may cheer you up Yankees’ fans. Thursday was the last time you will ever see Carl Pavano on the mound in a Yankees’ uniform. And what did New York get for its $40-million investment? A total of nine wins and less than 150 innings.

Nobody though Panvano will stink the way he did. The Yankees took a gamble and lost big time.

I can't believe the Mets actually woke up and won that game. The fact that they were even losing against that 2nd-tier lineup is sad.

Pedro looked awful against the minor league version of the Cubbies... RIncon looks awful against anyone-why the fuck do they use this guy? If they are serious about making the playoffs, why not tap into your starting rotation for an inning of relief? Instead they bring out the batting practice pitchers, Rincon, Feliciano, Schoeneweis, Heilman... 3 more excruciating games to go
