Arrest in Bay Ridge Rape Case

2008_09_rapbr.jpgPolice have arrested a homeless man for allegedly raping a woman in her Bay Ridge apartment last week. The suspect is identified as Ralph DiMassi, 39, who, according to the Post, is on parole for robbery. The Post adds, DiMassi "was ratted out by a pal arrested on Staten Island for shoplifting." The friend said DiMassi "did something bad to a woman in Bay Ridge last week." The victim had been hit with a screwdriver as she was leaving for work in the morning (the suspect had been lurking in and around the building) and then she was dragged into the basement and raped.

Felix - yeah, because lots of jerkwads will show up and argue that this wasn't a serious crime.

I'm really glad they caught this guy. Expect the Bay Ridge Talk vigilantes to keep focusing on the homeless population of BR.

[5] But NYPD didn't solve the case. If the other guy hadn't been arrested for shoplifting and used the information to bargain, the rapist would still be unknown and at large. So I don't see how this was great police work in action.

I predict less thread rage in this case than against the cat-killer guy. correct.

I'm not the hugest fan of police in general, but in this case they did a really outstanding job. The afternoon after this occurred, there were cops all over Bay Ridge talking to everyone and putting up police sketches. It's great that they were able to quickly get this creep off the street.

I was speaking with one of the detectives, and they were worried if they didn't catch him fast, the neighborhood would which may have been preferable in some ways.
