Vendy Finalists Announced

The eaters have spoken! This year's Vendy Award finalists, culled from the public's nominations for best New York City street food vendor, were announced yesterday. The big news this year is that the Bronx is finally making its first showing, while the decidedly non-Mexican guys who run the Southern Californian Mexican cart Calexico will get another shot at the title. Get to know your nominees in this sweet video, which also features passionate testimonials from their devoted customers.

Who will take the Vendy cup? Vote for your favorite and find out at this year's Vendy's, taking place on October 18th from 3-7 p.m. at the Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO. Tickets are $80 and can be purchased online; proceeds benefit the Urban Justice Center's Street Vendor project, which protects the legal rights of the city's vendors. Below, the complete list and locations of this year's five vendor contenders.

The 2008 Vendy Awards Finalists are...

  • Fauzia Abdur-Rahman from “Fauzia’s Delights,” 161st Street and Sheridan Avenue, Bronx
  • Meru Sikder from “Biriyani Cart,” 46th Street & Sixth Avenue, Manhattan
  • Mohammed Rahman from “Kwik Meal,” 45th Street & Sixth Avenue, Manhattan
  • Rafael Soler from “Soler Dominican,” Clinton Street & Bay Street, Brooklyn (weekends only)

The interviews are excellent.

I can't believe Kareem and his falafel on 28th St and 10th Ave didn't make it into the finals. His falafel is divine, but the hot sauce does give me heart burn.
