Last Night's Action: What Now?

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Cubs 9 Mets 6 (10 innings): Jerry Manuel took all the questions after the game, but he didn’t have any answers. The Mets jumped out to a big lead and then saw it disappear as they lost one of their biggest games of the year.

Don’t blame the bullpen. They held the Mets in the game inning after inning, it was the offense that blew this one. Time after time, the Mets couldn’t get the big hit, no more so than the bottom of the ninth. David Murphy led off the inning with a triple, putting the team 90 feet from victory. But, David Wright struck out and after intentional walks to Delgado and Beltran, Ryan Church grounded into a force out at home. Ramon Castro struck out to end the inning and the Mets never threatened again.

So with four games left the Mets are 1-1/2 games back in the division and even with Milwaukee for the wild card.

  • Yankees 6 Toronto 2 (10 innings): It’s all about 2009 in Yankeeland and Phil Hughes reminded everyone why he should not be written off. Hughes pitched very well over eight innings and Bobby Abreu hit a grand slam for the win. The Yankees have now won seven-straight.

Goddamned Mets are screwing it up again.

Prediction: Mets wont be in the playoffs.
I hope I'm wrong.

The most pathetic loss by the Mets since the final game of last season.

Do the Mets know the season doesn't end Labor Day?

I blame the bullpen for this one as well. Oliver Perez couldn't finish 5 fucking innings. If they hadn't blown so many goddamned games all season, this loss wouldn't resonate nearly as much as it does now. Who cares if they make the playoffs now? They will be eliminated in short order... Yet another disappointing Mets season.

DANIEL Murphy led off the ninth inning with a triple, not David Murphy.

whitecastlerock, the pitching might be no good, but last I checked a BULLPEN has something to do with all the pitchers that come in after the starter.

Regardless, I'm not trying to be some idiot calling you out for the fact that the Mets are painful to watch. I don't even care if they make the playoffs anymore, they'd probably do about as much with that opportunity as when they took first place in the division a couple months ago.

So Delgado, the guy who none of us could stand to look at last year, is the only one on the team that doesn't suck when it counts.
