It's Time to Experiment!

mp3experiment0908.jpgThe MP3 Experiment is back for its 5th consecutive year. Rain or shine, it's going down in NYC this Saturday, and here's what you need to do: download the New York MP3 from the website, put it on your portable music playing device (you are even invited to kick it old school by burning the MP3 onto a CD and listen via a Discman), do not listen to the MP3 until Saturday (confession: we totally listened), wear a t-shirt in an Improv Everywhere-approved color (red, blue, yellow or green), bring an umbrella and uninflated balloon, head to Governor's Island, and press "play" at the correct time. Phew, that's it. The visual outcome will likely be a bit more dramatic this year if umbrellas are involved--especially if a bird's eye view time lapse is being done again.

TK, that's my favorite Monty Python quote ever!

That being said, why do people on here always have to rain on someone else's parade just because they don't see the fun in doing something out of the ordinary? You'd rather go home, sit on the couch, and watch TV for the rest of your lives? Talk about routine, boring, and exactly what everyone else is doing. You might as well live in the south or midwest.

And why is it this kind of thing is always made into something only 'hipsters' do?

For the record, I'm not going to this because it's going to rain cats and dogs and I'm never in favor of getting hit in the head with pets. Also, I'm not a hipster or a follower, just someone who is curious about things that are not something people would normally do... like build a deck or gamble away money you should keep for a rainy day... oh wait...

Have fun doing this in the pouring rain!

Most of the "flash mob" stuff that's been around has been started by hipsters, most other people don't gather in large groups to do any activities unless it involves a park or a parade.

And if you are going to follow someone's instructions, then technically you are a follower.

And I'll be helping a childhood friend rebuild a deck for his house in the Poconos on Friday - Saturday and we'll be going to Atlantic City to play in a PokerPro tournament on Sunday. I think I got twirling an umbrella in the rain beat.

But I gotta admit, I find those mob things fascinating to watch, not participate, in.

Attention NYPD, the illegal gathering of hipsters will occur on Governor's Island this Saturday. Please have your batons, tear gas and paddy cars/boats ready for the round up. Hope some of these hipsters' heads get busted.

Why is this for hipsters? Or make me a follower? I bet it's more fun than whatever lame activity you're doing on Saturday. Have fun seeing eagle eye.

  • Steven

The weather is going to be awful Saturday. Let those hipsters soak in the rain.

Brian: You don't need to follow me, you don't need to follow anybody! You've got to think for yourselves! You're all individuals!

    Crowd: Yes! We're all individuals!

    Brian: You're all different!

Crowd: Yes, we are all different!

    Man in Crowd: I'm not...

  • TRBoater

    It's fun.

#2 - people want to belong to a group. no matter how independent they think they are.

  • Ared

Maybe it's because I grew-up in (and fled) a totalitarian country, but the groupthink in this city is off the charts.

i'm sure hipsters will complain that it's being sponsored by yahoo this year, childishly thinking that bandwidth is free.
