As Fans Sweat Minaya Gets a New Deal

2008_09_omarextension.jpgMaybe Mets’ ownership is taking lessons from the Knicks? How else do you explain the news that Omar Minaya is getting a four-year contract extension with the season hanging in the balance? Minaya has done a solid job while running the Mets, but if they do not make the playoffs this year he will have presided over two September collapses. Doesn’t that warrant waiting on a new deal until the season ends? And, if Minaya is getting an extension how come Jerry Manuel is still only the “interim” manager? If you are going to hand out rewards a week early, you should be consistent. Didn’t they learn anything last year from the playoff seat debacle?

Yesirreee. That is some bullpen he assembled. Yep, his body of work to date is that impressive... Give that man a raise!

I think Manuel has done a much better job than Omar.

Just wait until next year people. I believe the Mets can do a three-peat. They ain't called the amazin's for nothing.

Looks like he is the guy in the video that was beating the guy in the Bronx.

The timing is odd but bear in mind that this is a leaked story, not an official announcement.

I don't feel Minaya has a good eye for talent -- he pretty much grabs whichever free agents the Red Sox or Yankees pass on and then hopes that x number of good stars will naturally translate into x number of wins. Of course, this is basically the same formula employed by the Yankees but at least they've had solid leadership-type players such as Paul O'Neil, Mariano Rivera and Bernie Williams to balance out the younger, ego-driven players. The only reason Minaya landed Santana is because Santana wanted to play for the Mets. Why he didn't pick up Kenny Lofton to babysit some of these inconsistent young hotheads is also beyond me.

This September has not been a "collapse" for the Mets. They are 11-9. The Phillies are 14-7.

Unlike last season the Mets have been up and down all season, much like the Yankees.

If the Mets miss the playoffs it's not really a collapse just very disappointing yet again.

"the Mets have been up and down all season, much like the Yankees." And also like the stock market.

They were worried they might lose him to the surging Mariners.
