Fewer Whites Fleeing the City, Census Finds

High five, bro: White people are making a big comeback in New York! Census figures show that the number of whites has increased in recent years, reversing a half century of white flight to the suburbs. Also, the Census Bureau found the number of Hispanic immigrants dipped last year for the first time in decades, and that's partly because they're the ones fleeing to the suburbs, in search of cheaper housing and better schools. According to the survey, Hispanic New Yorkers now account for 27% of the population, while the proportion of blacks declined to 23.5% in 2007. Asians make up 12% of New Yorkers and they were the fastest-growing group in the city until last year, when non-Hispanic whites grew faster, to over 35%. But white might not be the new black for long: As one Queens College professor points out to the Times, “a lot of the non-Hispanic whites are plainly associated with the financial community.”

Broadly speaking the growth of NYC into the metropolitan gotham we think of today ocurred in the industrial period of 1850 to the 1950's. In that period a large demand occured for masses of laborers categorizable into the ethnic and religious groups we think of today composing NYC's narrative. The great immigration period of the late 19th and early 20th century saw large numbers of Irish,Chinese, Italian, Eastern European (Jews mostly) coming to the country. Their fantasies and desires to emulate their Capitalist Wasp paymasters as well as make the labor end of the spectrum more liveable for the working man composes most of what we consider NYC social studies. The Southern Negro and Carribean Latino was last to enter the picture. The Negro has the most peculiar profile in that they didn't arrive on these shores willingly or with a fantasy to emulate or assimilate. The Negro story has always been that of victim, antagonist or altogether alien of the status quo. In the late 50's,60's and 70's many of the other groups abandoned the city for other parts of the country or the suburbs. As much as we romanticize olde new yorke it was essentially an unhealthy, crime ridden dangerous environment. People WANTED a house with nice streets and safe backyards. The arrival of poor, illiterate, criminal immoderate blacks and latinoes only reinforced the idea of NYC as cursed and unpleasant.

As the generations passed the largely white suburbanites- grew tired of their affluence and sameness and longed for the stimulation of urban environments. The problem was the unlivableness of central cities. They were dirty, crime ridden and lacked forward vision. With better policing and clever City Hall politics the cities became more habitable for the people who had ORIGINALLY made them..that brings us to today and the controversy of "gentrification" and the strange arguments that the blacks and latinos to whom the decaying environment had been left to- are now somehow the "true" inhabitants.

I don't know where this meme started that "whites" were somehow bad for the city's "flava". You should point out that the infrastructure and political/economic design is based in the European Tradition. Yes this is the New World and the melting pot ethos is proudly cherished, but people risk their lives to move from thirld world countries because they see SOME respect for universal humanity as well as material workability.
