[7] talks about the mother's use of the word "replace". Why, then, do journalists regularly use the phrase "only child" or "only son" to describe the pain of a parent whose child meets a bad end (in the city or at war) as if things wouldn't be so bad if there were others?

"The driver may have done something wrong.." MAY have? I'll go out on a limb here and say he DID do something wrong. Why does everybody talk like a damned lawyer nowadays?

thank god for the woman who took him back to the school; everyone was very lucky in that regard. as for the person who put him on the bus and the bus driver - wow. but for the mother, i'm really kind of disturbed by her use of the word "replace". i realize what that statement is supposed to mean, but that word is just not a good one to use there.
