Last Night's Action: Style Points Don't Count Now

Mets 9, Nationals 7: No one is surprised that the Mets made this one -- which they led, 7-1, at one point -- into an interesting game. “They’ll make a laugher a tearjerker, that’s what they’ll do," manager Jerry Manuel said of his team. What would have been funny for all the wrong reasons was losing three straight to the last-place Nationals, and the Mets needed all kinds of offense to avoid that. Carlos Beltran (twice) Jose Reyes andCarlos Delgado all went deep. Brandon Knight, three weeks or so removed from getting shelled by the Korean Republic in the Olympics, gave up two runs in five innings. He walked four and struck out five. Ricardo Rincon, Brian Stokes and Joe Smith tried to give away his lead, but they didn't. The Mets close out the series tonight with Johan Santana against Tim Redding.

Yankees 5, White Sox 1: Some bright spots in a season without many. Phil Hughes made Major League start for the first time since April 29. He went four innings, allowing one run and two walks and striking out four. And Alex Rodriguez became the first player ever to hit 35 homers and knock in 100 runs in 12 consecutive seasons. But the team still isn't making the playoffs.

I think they used 8 pitchers to protect a 6 run lead against the worst team in the Majors. How they got this far is amazing in itself.
