NYC Third Best Place on Earth to Be Gay!

091708gay.jpgOne can understand losing out to San Francisco, but being out-gayed by Sydney, Australia, where homosexuality was illegal until 1984? Sydney placed second in the Independent's hierargay, apparently solely on the strength of their fabulous three-week long Mardis Gras, which is the biggest dance party in the country. The UK paper, despite heralding New York as "the gay capital of the world," deems us only worthy of the bronze. Whatever. At least we bested the Greeks—no small feat—and their gaytopia island of Mykonos, which comes in fourth. For contrast, the Independent also shouts out the five worst places to be gay, which include Saudi Arabia, where homosexuality is punishable by death or whipping, and Nigeria, where even writing or talking about support for gay people can land you in prison. No Provincetown? Strange.

How can we be third when we have Broadway, the gay capitol of the universe?

San Francisco? Really? In 2002 I was gay bashed in the Mission district, in broad daylight, 20 feet away from the police station.
People just watched and the cops did nothing. I'll take New York over SF any day.

The recent horrendous violence on Oxford Street in Sydney would beg to differ.

Maybe Sydney is the second best place to be a lesbian, but second best place to be a gay man? Not a chance.

I heard Australia as a whole is pretty intolerant to just about everything.

#5, Kojak... more intolerant than I ever would have believed. They rival us.

@ choppy - one incident doesn't mean the city is homophobic.

And the mission is full of homeless people high out of their minds.

@smitty- Who said it was a homeless person? Nice assumption.

Perhaps this is the UK's latest attempt to undermine NYC as the greatest city in the world...period.

Marketing gayness is one thing, but safetyness while being openly gay is another.

San Francisco might be politically inclusive and the Castro might sprout rainbows across the city in bleak darkness; however, outside of those two areas SF is hardly a comfortable place to be open. I see more same-sex couples proudly holding hands (showing PDA) in communities in Queens and Brooklyn than I've seen in neighborhoods outside of the Castro in SF.

This list is BS, where is RIO? The largest Gay Mardi Gras and Parade is held there!

yeah! what about Key West ? !

and Chicago? Everyone I know in Chicago is gay and they all have a blast.

safetyness?

"I was gay bashed in the Mission district"

I think they gave you a hard time for not being gay enough. This is San Fran we're talkin about
